Author's Comment: I wrote this at the end of March and just haven't wanted to edit it. Writing this was my way of handling not being able to see L'Arc in NYC. Maybe that's why it took so long for me to work on it again... in the end, I haven't done too much editing. It could use some tweaking of course but it's not like it's horrible without my usual editing process. I feel like if I don't post it now I never will so... posting it anyway.
“I wonder what the cashier will think,” Tetsu mused, glancing down at the basket filled with bananas and lollipops. He and Hyde had gone to the store to stock up for tomorrow’s concert and had an interesting collection of items.
“That you’re a weird foreigner?” Hyde laughed, brushing his hair back behind his ear. He imagined the cashier would be curious since Tetsu was only buying bananas and lollipops. Hyde’s purchase was more normal - a chocolate bar and a bottle of water.
Tetsu pouted. “That’s not very nice.”
“But true though.” Hyde ruffled his hair. That and Tetsu tended to stand out. He was in one of his usual walking rainbow outfits: bright yellow jeans, boots, a patterned shirt that clashed with his jeans… that and the colorful pins in his hair. Tetsu walked up to the cash register and set the basket down. Hyde put the chocolate and water next to the basket and glanced at the cashier, interested to see her reaction to the items.
“Any coupons or bottle slips?” the cashier asked.
“Not today,” Tetsu said, giving her a charming smile. All of them had been practicing their English in preparation for the world tour. The cashier blinked as she saw the contents of the basket then glanced up at them, no doubt wondering about the odd Japanese customers buying bananas and candy. She didn’t ask questions though and scanned the items, placing them in the bags.
“Would you like the candy in the bag or with you?” she asked Hyde.
“With me, please.” He had had a chocolate craving. She handed him the candy bar and he took it. He might actually have to use the hotel gym due to all the sweets he’d been eating here. America did make the best junk food.
She scanned the last bunch of bananas and Tetsu paid. “Have a nice day.” She handed him the bags.
“You too.” Tetsu left the store with Hyde. The store wasn’t too far from their hotel so they could drop off the live items then resume exploring the city. Yukihiro was napping to recover from jet lag and Ken was probably exploring bars and flirting with American girls. Typical Ken. “Let’s stop at this park,” Tetsu said, indicating the nearby park.
“All right.” Hyde followed him, unwrapping the chocolate bar and breaking off a piece. It still felt surreal to be in New York. He’d been to the states once with L’Arc and a few times when he was solo. “So lollipops are going to become a permanent part of our shows?”
“Maybe. I think they have good potential.” Tetsu sat down on an open bench. Hyde took a seat next to him. They were all ready and eager for Sunday’s show and then continuing the rest of the tour. He was still surprised by the number of international fans they had. They should have done a world tour sooner, but at least they knew about their international fans now. Maybe another tour would be in the near future.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Oh, just being here.” Hyde offered Tetsu a piece of the chocolate bar. “I’m so proud of how far we’ve come. We’ve gone from struggling musicians in Osaka to being a famous band… even performing in Madison Square Garden.”
Tetsu took the candy. “Me too.” He laughed softly. “We have come a long way. Sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday that we were struggling to buy food in Osaka.”
“And you were that stubborn brat who stalked me and didn’t want me to play guitar,” Hyde teased. But he was grateful that Tetsu had pushed him to sing. He just fit as a vocalist.
The bassist laughed again. “You were hard to persuade.”
“I did realize that I’d be better as a singer though.” Everything had worked out for the best, even though it had been hard for him to see it at that time. They were quiet after that, each lost in thought about their careers. Once they made it big in Tokyo, everything had changed. Sometimes he did envy those days when he’d been anonymous and didn’t have to worry about paparazzi stalking his every move. Sitting in a public place like this in Japan would be difficult. But here in New York, only their fans would recognize them. It was nice to not feel like a celebrity for once.
Hyde glanced up as he heard the sound of rustling plastic. “Hey, those are for Sunday!” he complained, giving Tetsu a dirty look as he opened the box of lollipops and took one out.
“It’s just one,” the bassist huffed, unwrapping the candy. Hyde snorted as Tetsu slowly licked at it, glancing at him briefly before turning his attention back to the lollipop. What a transparent attempt at teasing.
“Stop before you embarrass yourself.” Hyde rolled his eyes. “I’m the best at the lollipop blowjob, Tet-chan. You really can’t compare.” Tetsu was too cute to pull off seductive. He could try, but it didn’t work very well.
“Why not?”
Hyde snatched the lollipop and slowly ran his tongue up it, showing him the correct way to seduce someone with a lollipop. He mastered the art of teasing long ago. “You’re too cute.”
“You’re just as cute,” Tetsu huffed.
“But I can be sexy too.” The singer smirked and stuck the lollipop in his mouth, hollowing his cheeks around it and pretending to give it a blowjob. Tetsu couldn’t take his eyes off him. Hyde popped the lollipop out with an obscene slurping noise. “You want to go back to our hotel so I can… give you a lesson?” he purred.
“Yes.” Tetsu got up quickly. He offered Hyde his hand and helped him to his feet then picked up the grocery bags. “Let’s go.”
Hyde smirked. “I thought you’d say that.” Years of licking microphones and lollipops made him the perfect teacher. And Tetsu always loved his lessons.
They might have to restock on bananas and lollipops after tonight though.
