Summary: Hiyuu returns from Hell in worse condition than before, Subaru isn't sure how to tell Hiyuu he's fallen in love with him.
Author's Comment: Part 6 in this series. The first part was sparked by a commenter on my last fic asking if Hiyuu didn't like Yuuki as much as he liked Rito and Subaru. I wanted to show that that's not the case at all! Hiyuu loves Yuuki, they're jsut not the cuddly romance type. The shopping scene was inspired by the Royz instore where they all wore each other's costumes. As usual my demon fics tend to expand into something larger. Rito was livid that I tried to leave him out and Subaru wanted to see Hiyuu again.
Life at the club was boring without Hiyuu. As much as Yuuki missed riling him up to get the sex he so craved, Yuuki simply missed having his lover around. Drinking with him or going out for dinner. Lying in bed with Rito between them, each with a wing draped over him. It wasn’t the same without him. Hiyuu should be returning from Hell soon so Yuuki wanted to be appropriately attired to welcome him. He wouldn’t even annoy him today.
Yuuki studied his closet, debating what to wear. Skimpy shorts or a skirt? Leather pants and no shirt? Or just stay in the towel for easy access. Yuuki decided to go for black leather and thigh flaunting. He’d just gotten dressed when Hiyuu’s energy appeared in the room along with the foul smell of burning flesh. Yuuki spun around, eyes widening in horror. Hiyuu was on his hands and knees with his wings spread out. They were charred so badly in places that there was no feather or muscle left. Merely bone. Yuuki had never seen damage this extensive before.
“Oh, Hi-chan,” Yuuki whispered. He rushed to his lover and knelt in front of him. “What happened to you?” He would gladly go into Hell himself so he could tear apart the demons who’d done this.
Hiyuu curled his arms around Yuuki’s waist, head dropping onto his shoulder. “Trouble,” he whispered. It killed him to see Hiyuu suffering so much. Because of his angel blood, Hiyuu had always been more prone to being a victim. It was one of the main reasons they had left Hell behind in the first place.
Yuuki stroked his hair. “What kind of trouble? Who attacked you?” Tell me who they are so I can destroy them for hurting you.
“Fire demons... when I was leaving,” Hiyuu explained. “They cornered me at the gates. They burned my wings and were about to kill me. I barely escaped.” He clutched Yuuki tightly, hissing in pain.
Yuuki growled. As much as he longed to hunt down and destroy those demons for daring to harm his love, Hiyuu needed him here more. Yuuki continued to stroke Hiyuu’s hair as he studied his wings. Damage this extensive would need time to heal. “Hi-chan, switch to human form. You’ll heal faster this way.” He wouldn’t feel the pain either. Yuuki couldn’t bear to watch Hiyuu suffer as he waited for feather and muscle to grow back.
“I don't think I can bend my wings,” Hiyuu admitted. His breath caught when he shifted, claws threatening to break through Yuuki’s shirt and skin.
“Hi-chan, open your mind. Share with me.” Yuuki couldn’t take all his pain but he could bear half of it.
Hiyuu grimaced against his shoulder. “No, Yuuki. You don’t want to feel this.”
“Neither do you,” Yuuki snapped. “I love you and want to help you. Now open your mind to me.” He would force their connection if he had to.
Hiyuu hesitated, but finally relented. He opened their connection so Yuuki could take on half of his pain. It had him hissing at first until he got used to it. Then he was even more appalled. The agony he felt was only half of what Hiyuu had dealt with. “Should I get Rito to help?” Or Satoshi. Given that he was a fire demon, perhaps it was best not to.
Hiyuu shook his head. “Not Rito. I don’t… I don't want him to see me like this.” He straightened so he could sit up, immediately grimacing. “Is Ichiro here?” He brushed his hair back with a shaky hand.
“He’s downstairs with Satoshi.” Yuuki gently squeezed Hiyuu’s hand. “See, we haven’t let our club burn down while you were away.” He’d gripe about how Hiyuu thought he and Rito were hopeless about business management later. Now wasn’t the time. “Do you need both of them or just Ichiro?”
“Both. I need help folding my wings so I can take on human form.” Hiyuu took a breath then carefully lay down on his stomach to lay his head in Yuuki’s lap. “I need you to just hold me through this.”
Yuuki leaned forward. “I’ll hold you all night if you want me to, Hi-chan.” He reached for Satoshi and Ichiro’s thoughts, careful to block Hiyuu’s pain from their minds. “Come up to my room. Hi-chan is back, but he’s hurt. He needs help with his wings.” As he spoke he took Hiyuu’s hands back into his, lacing their fingers together.
“We’ll be right up,” Satoshi promised.
“Do you need Rito too?” Ichiro asked.
“Hi-chan doesn’t want Ri-chan seeing him like this. If he wants to come, don’t try to stop him.” Rito would be livid, and they didn’t need to waste time arguing when Hiyuu needed them.
“is he that bad?” Ichiro asked.
“Yes.” Yuuki briefly let them feel Hiyuu’s pain. “Now hurry.”
Hiyuu didn’t have to wait too much longer. Satoshi and Ichiro burst into the room followed by a furious Rito. “How dare you try to leave me out?” he hissed, only to freeze as he saw Hiyuu. His eyes went wide, Satoshi swearing, while Ichiro made a noise of sympathy.
“Shit, Hiyuu, what the fuck happened?” Satoshi asked.
“Fire demons cornered me at the gates. Said angel spawn like me shouldn’t be allowed to exist. They-”
“You can tell us about it later,” Yuuki cut in. “Ri-chan, come here. The three of us can share Hi-chan’s pain together. Ichiro, take his left wing. Satoshi, you take the right. Help Hi-chan fold his wings so he can take on his human form again.”
“No, don't make Rito…” Hiyuu tried to protest.
Rito glared at him, the action lost on him since Hiyuu couldn’t see him. He marched over and knelt by Yuuki so he could take one of Hiyuu’s hands. “I’ll yell at you later for trying to keep me away. Yuuki isn’t ‘making’ me do anything. I love you as much as he does and if he’s sharing your pain then I will too.”
Hiyuu sighed against Yuuki’s legs. He squeezed their hands and opened his mind to Rito. His breathing lost the ragged edge now that Rito was there. It was about to get much worse though with his mangled wings being manipulated against his back. Satoshi and Ichiro took their assigned wing. Hiyuu gripped Yuuki and Rito’s hands tightly, unable to stop pained whimpers as the demons bent his wings. A couple feathers fell, each demon wincing as they heard bone crack.
“Sorry,” Satoshi whispered, putting a little more force into his wing until finally it was folded against Hiyuu’s back. Ichiro grimaced as another bone cracked, Hiyuu’s claws digging into Rito and Yuuki’s palms as Ichiro got the wing in place. Claws and wings faded along with the wings, taking the pain with it. A now human Hiyuu squeezed his lovers’ hands as he sat up.
“What the fuck happened?” Satoshi asked again. “I thought you were supposed to be back already! Then you come back mauled.”
Hiyuu lifted Yuuki onto his lap, wrapping one arm around his waist and pulling Rito close with the other. “My mother kept insisting that I stay for another one of her insufferable parties. I wanted none of it. I wanted to be back here with all of you.” He hugged his lovers closer. “So I left. As I was at the gates, I was attacked by fire demons. They… they overpowered me. Burned my wings. I was only able to escape because they were distracted by new souls.”
Hearing that made Satoshi growl. “Fire demons attacked you? Yuuki, baby, we have some demons to kill later.”
Yuuki smiled wickedly. “Yes, we do.” He kissed Hiyuu’s cheek. “Subaru is in Kyoto visiting his parents. Call him tonight, love. Let Ichiro and Rito take care of you while Satoshi and I make those fuckers pay for hurting you.”
Slowly Hiyuu let Yuuki slip from his lap. “Be careful.” He took their hands in his, opening his mind to them and concentrating on the memory of his attackers so the two could learn their faces and energy signals. Having to relieve the experience made Yuuki’s blood boil.
“Oh, Hi-chan. They’ll never hurt you or anyone else again,” Yuuki promised. He pulled his lover into a kiss and moved his hands into his hair. He wondered if he should stay with his lover and get revenge later. Just knowing that those demons were out there would keep him from relaxing though. He needed them dead. Then he could come back and cuddle Hiyuu. Yuuki broke the kiss, turning to kiss Rito too before straightening. “Rest, love.” He stood and moved to his closet again. He changed into the sluttiest, most seductive outfit he owned. He would lure the fire demons to him then he and Satoshi would attack. Make them suffer before he finally granted them the sweet embrace of death.

Rito watched Yuuki and Satoshi go. He wished he could join them in ending the miserable lives of the assholes who’d dared to harm his precious Hiyuu. He couldn’t just leave Hiyuu alone though. He needed Rito there. Rito ran his hand over his lover’s back, looking at the feathers on the floor. How long would it take for Hiyuu’s wings to heal? He’d have to regrow over half the muscle and feathers he’d once had. How horrific… this wasn’t something that could be healed overnight. This was going to take days. Maybe even a week or two.
“Feel better, Hi-chan?” Rito asked.
“Now that I’m human, yes.” Hiyuu rolled his shoulders then glanced over at Ichiro. “We’re going to be short staffed tonight. I-”
“You are not bartending tonight,” Rito said firmly. “We are going to take a bath then we’re going to lie in bed and relax. You need to be resting. It’s going to take a lot of energy to heal your wings. Call Hiro and Masa.”
Ichiro grinned. “Good idea. And with Satoshi out, he and Hiro can’t get into trouble like they usually do.”
Hiyuu sighed. “Fine, Ichiro go call them. I’ll leave you in charge downstairs. I get the feeling Rito is going to tie me up if I try to do any work.”
“Oh don't tempt him,” Ichiro laughed. He leaned down to hug the still seated Hiyuu. “I’m glad you’re back. It’s not the same without you here… you’re the glue that holds us all together. Plus Yuuki kept whining.”
Rito smiled fondly as he stroked Hiyuu’s hair. “He’s right about both. Yuuki missed you and kept griping that he was going to go into Hell and drag you back if you didn’t return soon.”
Hiyuu snorted. “For someone who claims to miss me so much when I’m gone, he sure does enjoy irritating me when I’m around.” His expression softened. “I missed him too though. All of you.” He slowly rose to his feet, looking at Ichiro. “Are you sure you can manage things by yourself?”
Ichiro rolled his eyes. “I’m not incompetent, Hiyuu. I can manage.”
Hiyuu had no choice but to trust him since Rito wasn’t going to let him downstairs. Ichiro was right-Rito would tie his lover up if he had to. Gladly. Once Ichiro was gone, Rito immediately whirled on Hiyuu. “Explain yourself,” he ordered. “Why the fuck would you try to leave me out of helping you? I was the first to love you! I was in your life before Yuuki so why did you go to his room and not mine? Why did you try to shut me out when you needed me?” He was worried about Hiyuu yet also angry. Rito wasn’t usually the type to get jealous but in this case, he couldn’t help it.
Hiyuu had the decency to look guilty. “It wasn’t because I didn’t want you there. I don’t even know why I picked Yuuki’s room. It was the first place I thought of. As for why I tried to shut you out, it’s because of my wings. I know how much you love them, Ri-chan. I didn’t want you to see me looking the way I did.”
Rito glared at him. “I love you for you, not just your wings, you idiot. Don’t pull shit like this again because I am NOT going to stand for it.”
“I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.”
“Good.”
After a long, relaxing soak in the bathtub they moved to Rito’s bed to curl up beneath the sheets. It was strange to lie next to Hiyuu in his demonic form while Hiyuu was human. Even though his demonic form looked so human… Rito pushed the thoughts away as he snuggled closer. He had some good news for Hiyuu.
“Guess who’s coming back on Sunday,” he said.
Hiyuu shrugged. “I don't know. Yuuki?”
“No, it won’t take him that long. He’s probably washing blood off now. Or he went and tracked down your mother to yell at her for letting you go alone.” Rito wanted to do the same. She knew Hiyuu had had a target on him since birth. She was a powerful succubus; had she been there, Hiyuu likely wouldn’t be in this condition.
“I’m an adult not a child. I don't need my mother to babysit me,” Hiyuu grumbled. “I would’ve been able to handle things if there hadn’t been so many of them.”
Rito sighed. “There were too many though and you had no one to aid you. You’re not going into Hell without me or Yuuki again. If your mother wants to bitch about it, I’ll tell her to fuck off. She neglected to take proper care of you.” He stroked Hiyuu’s hair again. “Anyway… what I was trying to say is that Subaru will be back on Sunday.” Rito thought it was cute how Hiyuu had fallen in love with a human. Anyone could see that Subaru loved him too. They just hadn’t verbalized it yet. Why they waited was something Rito didn’t understand. Subaru was mortal while Hiyuu was not. They couldn't afford to wait.
Hiyuu brightened. “He is? Good, I miss having him around.”
Rito lazily draped a leg over Hiyuu’s. “I miss making him blush. He’s so cute when he’s flustered.”
Hiyuu snorted. “You and Yuuki torment him too much.”
“And you’re overprotective of him.”
Hiyuu didn’t even try to deny it. He’d been protective of Subaru since the night he met him. Rito was relieved he didn’t have to worry so much about Kuina. It’d be headache inducing. He slowly traced patterns onto Hiyuu’s skin. “When are you going to tell Subaru you love him?” he asked.
“When I believe he’s ready to hear it.”
Rito sighed softly. What a ridiculous response. There really was no sense in waiting. He hadn’t bothered with it when he realized he was in love. “Just promise me you’ll tell him soon. He’s mortal, Hi-chan. Have fun and be happy with him while you can.” Rito didn’t want the conversation to become depressing after what Hiyuu had been through today, but he was also a realist. The sooner they confessed the better.
Hiyuu frowned at him. “Subaru is only twenty-one. He’s still so young.”
“I know he is. So is my Kuina. They won’t be young forever though… they’ll age and we won’t. I’m sorry, Hi-chan, I don't want to be depressing, but you really shouldn’t be waiting. Subaru absolutely adores you and I know he loves you too. You’re just idiots and haven’t said anything yet. Don’t act like you’re waiting around for his sake. He loves you and he’s going to light up like a Christmas tree when you say you love him too.”
“I know…”
“Then tell him when he gets here on Sunday.” Or I’ll tell him for you.

On the train ride back to Tokyo, all Subaru could think about was seeing Hiyuu again. He’d missed him so much. He was excited to see him again tonight. Maybe it was silly, but he’d bought him (and everyone else) souvenirs from Kyoto. Demons probably didn’t need little human trinkets, but Subaru wanted to share his hometown with them. Especially Hiyuu. Maybe today was finally the day he’d work up the courage to tell Hiyuu he was in love with him. Subaru just wasn’t sure how to do so. Bluntly tell him? Do something romantic? He was going shopping with Rito and Yuuki after dropping off his luggage. Maybe he should ask them for advice. See how they’d told Hiyuu they loved him. Did he really want their advice though? Yuuki would probably suggest he wear some sexy outfit (what a mortifying thought). Actually, Rito probably would too.
He’d figure something out.
Once he reached Tokyo station, Subaru got off the shinkansen and headed to the JR tracks. As he waited for his train to arrive he pulled out his phone to text his demons.
In a group message to Rito and Yuuki: I’m back in Tokyo now. Just waiting for my train.
Rito and Yuuki: Welcome back <3
Rito: Want to come meet us after you drop off your suitcase? We’ll treat you to lunch
Subaru was never one to pass up free food. He was also hungry. He’d eaten his mother’s bento box already.
Subaru: Sure. Where did you want to go shopping?
Yuuki: Let’s start in Harajuku
Subaru: Which exit?
Rito: Takeshita Street
Their next picture was a selfie. Rito had his hair curled like he usually did and wore a clingy gray shirt that was falling off one shoulder. Subaru couldn’t tell what else he was wearing but knowing Rito, not much. Yuuki had a t-shirt and leather jacket. They’d be easy to find at least. They’d probably have a bunch of girls (or boys) drooling over them.
Subaru: Okay. I’ll see you there
Yuuki: We’ll be waiting
Subaru pocketed his phone again. He glanced down at his suitcase. Leaving Kyoto, coming home, shopping, seeing Hiyuu… today was going to be an eventful day. Hopefully he wouldn’t be too tired to properly celebrate his homecoming tonight.
Once he was out shopping with Rito and Yuuki, Subaru reminded himself to do this more often. It was amazing. They modeled sexy outfits for him, Yuuki would pull him into his dressing room to make out, Rito (despite being Kuina’s lover) would cast him a sultry look and ask him to come zip up a top or lace a corset for him. They bought so many new clothes that Subaru found himself playing the boyfriend and carrying their bags as he followed them from store to store.
“You guys bought a lot,” Subaru said as he adjusted his grip on the bag handles. “Can your closets fit all this?”
Yuuki smirked. “Oh, Baru-chan. You know Rito doesn’t wear much.” He ran his hand up Rito’s bare thigh, sliding under the hem of his black skirt.
Rito smiled playfully at Subaru. “Shorts and skirts don’t take up much space. You should get some too. Yuuki and I have shopped while all you bought was a bracelet.”
“He wouldn’t even let me buy him that chain harness,” Yuuki grumbled, prompting Subaru to blush. He was not built for wearing most of their suggestions. Clothes like the ones they preferred were best suited on people like them: dainty and slender.
“I looked ridiculous in my maid costume,” Subaru wrinkled his nose. “You’re the one with the long, sexy legs, Rito.”
Rito rolled his eyes. “Subaru, you caught yourself two demons while wearing that outfit. You looked anything but ridiculous.”
Yuuki linked arms with him to pull him close. “Rito’s right. You made a beautiful maid. Drawing Hi-chan and I to you despite how you were so cute and innocent.”
“I’m not that innocent,” Subaru grumbled. Hiyuu had learned that the next week when they got in bed together. As had Yuuki once they had eventually had sex.
“I didn’t know that then,” Yuuki reminded him. He kissed Subaru’s cheek. “Now come on, let’s get you something to wear next.” He exchanged a look with Rito that made Subaru nervous. They were plotting something. If they thought they could get him to try on a miniskirt or thigh flaunting shorts, they were wrong.
…or so he thought.
“Subaru, come out and show us your outfit!” Rito insisted.
Subaru pouted at the mirror. He was afraid to step out of the dressing room. The little black shorts with the garters connecting to the pant legs that covered him from the knee down were atrocious. He liked the shirt though. It was soft and black, hanging off one shoulder in an asymmetrical style. It also had shimmery wings on the front. “I look horrible,” he whined.
“Come show us! I'm sure you look beautiful,” Yuuki insisted.
Subaru grudgingly stepped forward so he could pull open the curtain and show them how absurd he looked. Much to his surprise neither demon looked surprised or on the verge of laughter.
Yuuki licked his lips as he scanned Subaru from head to toe. “Oh, Baru-chan. You shouldn’t be covering this gorgeous body all the time. You’re beautiful.”
“Hiyuu will love seeing you in this outfit.” Rito grinned at Yuuki. “So would you.”
“I'm enjoying it already,” Yuuki purred, eyes hungry as he drank him in. The scrutiny made Subaru fidget again, tugging at the hem of the shirt in a futile attempt to cover himself. “Stop it, Subaru. You look incredible. You’re nowhere near as heavy as you think you are.” Yuuki got up and went over to him, taking his hand and pulling him over to the full mirror. “See? You’re beautiful.”
Rito joined them. “I’ll take a picture and show Kuina. He’ll love this and want you to wear it for him.” Grinning, he snapped a picture before Subaru could protest and sent it to Kuina.
Yuuki smoothed down Subaru’s shirt then toyed with his hair. “Let me buy this for you. I love you in it, and Hiyuu will take one look at you then whisk you off to his bedroom to appreciate how stunning you are.”
Subaru blushed again as he thought about Hiyuu. The wings on the shirt reminded him of Hiyuu even though the color was off. He did feel ridiculous in the outfit, but Hiyuu had liked him in his maid costume despite his constant blushing and pathetic attempts at flirting. “Well, if you really think Hiyuu would like it…”
“He will,” the demons encouraged.
Subaru took a breath. “I’ll get it then.”
Yuuki grinned. “Good. And I insist I pay. I have more money that I know what to do with so let me treat you.”
Subaru did feel a little guilty about letting Yuuki pay-he didn’t need a demon sugar daddy-but he also knew how stubborn Yuuki was. “Okay. Thank you.”
Yuuki smiled wickedly as he ran his hand up Subaru’s exposed thigh. “You’re welcome. You can repay me by wearing this outfit for me again.”
Subaru promised he would.

Back at the club, Subaru wasn’t even allowed to find Hiyuu and say hello. Instead he was whisked up the stairs to Yuuki’s room, pushed into a chair, and made to sit still while Yuuki styled his hair and did his makeup. Well used to Kuina using him as his living mannequin, Subaru stayed still unless instructed to do otherwise.
“Um, Yuuki, why are you putting makeup on me? Hiyuu is used to seeing me without…” Subaru trailed off. He liked makeup so was happy to wear it, but he was also comfortable with his natural face.
“I want you to look exceptionally beautiful tonight, Baru-chan. Hiyuu should see you and be spellbound. He shouldn’t be able to take his eyes…or hands… off you.” Yuuki smirked as he picked up his eyeshadow brushes. “Now close your eyes.”
Subaru’s eyes fluttered shut. Was there something going on that he wasn’t aware of? Yuuki usually wasn’t this interested in getting him dolled up. Had something happened to Hiyuu and all this was a way to distract him or make him feel better? No, that couldn’t be. Subaru had called him on Friday. They’d exchanged texts (to the point his parents asked if he had a new boyfriend, his mom’s victorious smirk only making his blush deepen), and nothing had seemed amiss. Did Yuuki know how Subaru felt about Hiyuu despite how he hadn’t even mentioned it today? Ugh, his imagination was going haywire. He’d find out when he saw Hiyuu for himself.
“Open your eyes now.” Yuuki adjusted Subaru’s hair then after applying some lipgloss (why bother when he’d just be making out Hiyuu later) Yuuki turned Subaru so he could see his reflection. Yuuki had done an incredible job with the makeup. Subaru looked stunning, hair lightly mussed and eyes dark and sultry. Yuuki had even brushed some shimmer powder onto his thighs and shoulders. “What do you think?” Yuuki grinned as he laid his hands on his shoulders.
Subaru gazed at their reflections. “I… think you’re right. Hiyuu really will be spellbound by me.” He still felt weird in the outfit, but he also knew Rito and Yuuki genuinely thought he looked gorgeous. It was only his own insecurity getting in the way. As usual.
“You’ll take his breath away,” Yuuki promised. He had Subaru stand so he could adjust his outfit next. “There, now you’re perfect. Now to find Hi-chan.” He took Subaru’s hand and walked out with him. They found Hiyuu down at the bar talking to Satoshi. “Hi-chan, look who I brought,” Yuuki purred. He grinned as Hiyuu raised his head eyes going wide as he saw Subaru. He fidgeted again, giving the shorts a nervous tug. Now that he was with Hiyuu he was feeling ridiculous again. “Tell Subaru-chan how beautiful he looks so he’ll stop being so insecure.” Yuuki nudged Subaru forward.
Hiyuu smiled and reached for Subaru’s hand. He drew him closer, wrapping his arm around Subaru’s waist. “You look absolutely stunning.”
Subaru pressed closer to Hiyuu. It felt so good to be with him again. “You don’t think I look horrible?” He was still struggling to accept that he didn’t look absurd.
“Never.” Hiyuu studied his face, eyes drinking him in.
“Want some champagne to share?” Satoshi teased, breaking the moment. Subaru flushed. He’d gotten lost in Hiyuu’s eyes like some type of romantic heroine. It tended to happen whenever he was with Hiyuu though. Maybe it was a normal thing when you were in love with someone.
“Would you like some champagne?” Hiyuu asked.
Subaru leaned in to kiss him. “Sure.” Ignoring Satoshi’s perverted smirk, he took the offered champagne while Hiyuu released his waist so he could take two glasses.
“Take care of the bar tonight,” Hiyuu told the redhead.
Satoshi winked. “Sure thing, boss. Have fun upstairs.”
“You can borrow my handcuffs if you want,” Yuuki teased.
Hiyuu rolled his eyes. “You two are hopeless.” He brought Subaru upstairs to his room, kicking the door shut behind them. He set the champagne and glasses down on the little table and poured drinks for them. He handed Subaru his glass. “Did you have a good time in Kyoto?”
“I did! It was nice to see my family again. Especially Kento… I’ve been in Tokyo for a couple years now, but it’s still weird living so far from my twin.”
“I can imagine it is. Does he come visit you in Tokyo a lot?”
“We’re trying to visit more. It’s easier now that we both have jobs so we can afford to do it more often.” Subaru sipped his champagne, hesitating before setting it down. “I missed you though. Kuina and I are here so often it felt strange not coming to the club.” I missed kissing you, touching you. I missed being with you whether we’re clothed or not. The words were in his mind but they wouldn’t come out. He rubbed his hands on his legs, starting to get nervous. Maybe he should just tell Hiyuu he loved him later. “I um bought you a souvenir.” He pulled out the little bag with a folding fan that had Kinkaku-ji painted on it. “I don’t know if you’ve been to Kyoto before but I thought these were pretty. I guess you could smack Yuuki with it if he gets too annoying.”
Hiyuu laughed. “I could. Thank you, Subaru. It’s beautiful.” He opened the fan and admired the design on it.
Subaru took another drink of champagne. What was he, twelve and afraid to confess to his crush? This was Hiyuu! They knew each other so well. Even if Hiyuu didn’t love him back he wouldn’t become awkward about not being able to return his feelings. Subaru should just tell him. He lost his nerve again when Hiyuu raised his head to look at him. Okay fine he’d tell Hiyuu after they had sex. Though wouldn’t that be bad? Subaru didn’t want Hiyuu to think he loved him just for the sex. Even though the sex was amazing.
“Are you okay? You look nervous.”
“I’minlovewithyou,” Subaru blurted, immediately groaning and burying his face in his hands. That was pathetic. Apparently awkward confessions ran in the family.
Hiyuu gently pulled his hands down so he could look at him. “Tell me again.”
Subaru was still too nervous to look at him so he ducked his head. Took a breath. Tried to speak slower this time but not so slow he sounded stupid or condescending. “I’m in love with you. I was just… afraid to tell you. I’m human. You’re a demon. Why would you love me when you have Rito and Yuuki?” Hiyuu was surrounded by beautiful demons, could have his pick of any human he wanted. Yet he was with Subaru.
“Oh, Subaru.” Hiyuu wrapped his arms around him. “You always sell yourself short. You’re amazing. I don't care that you’re human and I’m a demon. I love you for Subaru, not for what you are.” He turned Subaru’s face up and kissed him.
Subaru was too shocked to kiss him back. Hiyuu loved him too? He didn’t care that Subaru was merely an ordinary human rather than a gorgeous sex demon like his lovers? “What?” he managed to squeak out.
“I love you too. I have for a while actually.”
“W-Why didn’t you tell me?” Subaru asked. If he’d known this earlier he could have confessed already!
Hiyuu smoothed his hair back. “Because I didn’t think you were ready to hear it. I didn’t want to put pressure on you or make you doubt yourself like you are now. I wish you could be as proud of and love yourself as much as I love you. You say you’re only human, but you’re anything but. You and Kuina are two very special humans. You even more so because while Rito enjoys Kuina’s company, he isn’t in love with him. You, Subaru, are the first human that has seen me in my true form and the first human I’ve fallen in love with. You also drew Yuuki’s attention the night all of us met. To us, humans were just fun for one night stands. We would never be with the same human twice. Why should we when we had each other? You though, you were different. Yuuki kept wondering what would’ve happened if he hadn’t lost control that night. And I wondered what would’ve happened if I hadn’t been too worried about him to focus on you. Then once we slept together, I knew one night with you as my lover wasn’t enough.”
Subaru found himself blushing again as he listened to Hiyuu. He had to admit that Hiyuu was right: he had to be special for catching two demons. Rito had said so himself about his maid costume. “I… I never thought about it that way.” He smiled as he reached for Hiyuu’s hand, curling their fingers together. “Can we go on dates now?”
Hiyuu grinned. “I’d like that.” He kissed Subaru again. “It’ll be fun to be able to take someone on a date and have him enjoy it.”
Subaru blinked. “You don’t take Rito and Yuuki on dates?”
Hiyuu made an exasperated face. “Taking them on dates is impossible. I’ve tried taking Yuuki out for dinner before. He gets bored and wants to have sex with me in the bathroom. I suppose if I took him on a date, I could bring him to a themed room at a love hotel. He’d enjoy that. Or a cat café… but then he ignores me and plays with the cats. Rito likes going out for coffee or parfaits, but if I try to take him out for dinner and a movie he gets annoyed that we have to masquerade as humans. He’d rather do dinner in so we can be in our true forms. That way he can kiss me, touch me all he wants without society’s absurd homophobia getting in the way.”
Subaru nodded. He didn’t like how homophobic their society was either. It was getting better, but there was still a long way to go. “Well, maybe we could do both? We could have dates out when you’re in this form and have dates in so you can be in your demon form? I thought you were gorgeous when I first saw you and then when I saw you in your demon form, I was spellbound. I like you in either form. All that matters is that I have you.” He wanted Hiyuu now. He moved over to him, champagne forgotten as he slid his hands into Hiyuu’s hair. “Kiss me,” he whispered.
Hiyuu pressed him closer as he obeyed. He grasped Subaru’s waist as he walked them backwards, sitting down on the bed and pulling Subaru down onto his lap. Oh he liked this much better. He’d missed being in Hiyuu’s lap. He especially missed riding him and touching his beautiful wings. He’d ask Hiyuu to bring them out for him once they got rid of their clothes. Hiyuu moved his hands to Subaru’s thighs to toy with his garters, teasingly lifting one and letting it fall back against his thigh. “This is a very unexpected look for you. Different is good though.” He grinned and ran his hands up and down Subaru’s thighs.
Subaru smiled shyly. “I didn’t like it at first, but it’s not so bad now. Yuuki and Rito were right.”
“About?”
“About how you wouldn’t be able to take your eyes or hands off me tonight.” He’d have to thank them later for making him try on this outfit. Well, he knew how he could thank Yuuki.
Hiyuu smirked. “They do know what I like. I don’t want you to wear something you don’t feel comfortable in though. I have Yuuki and Rito who are more than happy to dress up in something sexy and skin flaunting. They’re confident in anything they wear. If you don’t feel comfortable in something enticing, don’t wear it. I’ll love you just as much whether you’re in jeans and hoodies or in something like this.”
Subaru smiled. That was sweet. “Don’t ever expect me to wear something like Rito does. This though… this I’ll keep. Wear for you again later.” He should just have Yuuki join them the next time he wore this outfit.
“Mm, I’ll hold you to that.” Hiyuu pulled him into another kiss. Subaru kissed him eagerly, then pushed his hands up his shirt. He wanted to get this off so he could see Hiyuu’s wings. Looking at them on his phone wasn’t nearly the same as looking at them with his own eyes. As well as being able to touch them. Hiyuu broke the kiss and lifted his arms so Subaru could get his shirt off.
Subaru ran his hand down Hiyuu’s back. “Show me your wings.” He was surprised when Hiyuu hesitated before shaking his head.
“Not tonight. They don’t look good.”
Subaru blinked. What did he mean? Hiyuu’s wings were always beautiful. How could they possibly look bad? “I’m sure they don’t. Can I see them? I missed your wings.”
“Subaru…”
“Please?” Subaru begged. He didn’t understand why Hiyuu was being so self-conscious about his wings now when he’d never done this before.
Hiyuu gave in with a heavy sigh. “Fine. Don’t say I didn’t warn you though.” It seemed to take longer than usual for him to shift into his demon form. Subaru felt the light press of claws at his hips first before Hiyuu’s wings slowly unfurled. The sight of his wings had him gasping and covering his mouth, eyes widening in horror. Oh my god. What had happened to Hiyuu? His pinion feathers were almost all missing, there were patches of wing that were merely bone while others had raw, red muscle where the feathers had yet to regrow. When Subaru finally tore his gaze from the wings to look at Hiyuu, his face was drawn with pain. Hiyuu dropped his hands from Subaru’s waist, resting them on his own legs as he took a shaky breath. He grimaced as his wings slowly folded back against his body so he could return to human form. It was obviously difficult for him, only deepening Subaru’s shame. Once his demonic features were gone, so was his pain. “I told you my wings didn’t look good.”
Subaru lowered his gaze in shame. He was a horrible person. He’d pushed Hiyuu even though he clearly didn’t want Subaru to see his wings. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered. He bit his lip as he slid off of Hiyuu’s lap. “W-What happened to you?”
“I was attacked by fire demons when I was leaving Hell. My wings are much better compared to the state they were then. The healing process is taking longer than I’d anticipated,” Hiyuu sighed, rolling his shoulders. “I’m essentially trapped in my human form until my wings have healed. They hurt too much now and if I have them out and they brush against something, it’s agonizing.”
“I'm sorry,” Subaru said again. “I should’ve listened to you.” This was supposed to be a great night where he confessed his love and they had celebratory sex. Now he felt horrible, Hiyuu was in pain, and the romantic mood was completely dead.
Hiyuu surprised him when he pulled Subaru back onto his lap. “You’ve never seen me injured before so you wouldn’t have been able to imagine that I would be in this condition.”
Subaru tentatively touched his shoulder. “But you’re healing?”
“I am. I’m hoping by next week everything will be normal again. It’s so strange to be human for this long,” Hiyuu muttered. He sighed again then wrapped his arms around Subaru. “Don’t look so tortured. It was only for a few moments.”
“Still,” Subaru protested. He should’ve known better. “I should’ve listened to you. You didn’t want me to see your wings. I should’ve realized something was wrong…” he trailed off when Hiyuu pressed a finger to his lips.
“Shh. I’m not going to let you feel guilty about this.” Hiyuu silenced his protests with a kiss.
Subaru reluctantly let the subject drop and kissed Hiyuu in return. Hiyuu wasn’t upset with him so maybe they could get the mood back. This evening could even turn out the way he’d imagined (and hoped) it would on the train.
Notes
1) I'm going to do my absolute best to have two more demon fics done this month. I've set the next one (Romancing Subaru) to be due October 15 and the final one will be written on Halloween and set exactly a year after Irresistible Temptations.
2) I've wanted to mention Subaru's mortality but couldn't find the right moment for it. It is something he worries about because he knows that some day, he's not going to be there anymore. As Rito said though: They can't afford to wait. They'll be happy while they can.
3) Aside from the two fics mentioned in Note 1, I have three possible ones I may write in this universe. I'm just not sure I'll get to them.
