A Long Forgotten Kiss
Chapter 7
There was silence after Spike's last sentence.
A questioning noise form Xander finally shook Spike out of his thoughts.
"Anyways, think you're ready to come in?" he asked. Stepping up to the front door, he opened it a crack, letting in light from the street lamps and the headlights of the car. He could see Willow and Dawn pulling themselves together.
"Yeah, we're fine." Willow declared. A click told him she'd ended the call and the door on the driver's side opened to let a tall wiry woman exit. Her long hair was tied back in a careless ponytail, and the keys dangled unnoticed from her fingers.
A moment later, Willow stepped around the front of the car to join Dawn on the sidewalk. She was still small and slender, though age had quieted her bubbly energy and given her a new stillness and concentration.
Both exuded a quiet confidence and power that awed Spike every time he saw them again after a separation. They had found their own paths, stepped out of the Slayer's long shadow and gained a reputation of their own without ever deserting her.
As they approached the house, Spike opened the door further and stepped back to where Xander observed him in the doorway to the living room.
"You alright, pet?" he asked gently as Xander pressed close, standing behind and slightly to the side of Spike.

Willow saw the door open a crack, a flash of white-blonde hair shining through. Reluctantly, she straightened and got out of the car, suddenly hesitant about this reunion with her oldest friend.
Would he even recognise them?
She was honest enough to admit that she had her doubts, even if only to herself. Considering Spike's description of Xander's reactions, not to mention what she had seen and heard and read, it was a wonder that Xander was even coherent enough to recognise Spike, let alone speak. The Watcher in her was already making notes and comments on the strength of their bond even as she stepped around the car and approached the house.
The door opened wider as they came closer, and she saw Spike step back toward where she remembered the door to the living room, a tall dark shadow closing in against his back.

Dawn tried to keep all emotion from her face, despite the turmoil whirling inside her head. The pain in Spike's voice, mingling with tiny shards of hope was almost too much to bear. She knew how much these past 50 years had cost him, being aware that Xander was still alive, even though he had been told there was no way that could be, yet not knowing where he was and with no way to find him. She had done everything she could to help him search, and finally, a few weeks ago, there was the hint that led them here. But now she wasn't sure anymore if that was a good thing.
As she exited the car, a snarky voice inside her head, that sounded suspiciously like Spike, couldn't resist pointing out that she had 'parked English style'. She couldn't even muster an internal smile.
Approaching the house, she could see Spike's hair through the door crack, just before the door was opened completely and Spike moved back to stand next to a shadowy figure in a doorway.
