Huge big thank you to
aeb for the beta, I'm sorry if I was a bit of a difficult author with this part.
We're nearing the end now, and I hope to have the last chapter(s) up before the end of the summer. It's been a long, long ride, but I've enjoyed it muchly, however much I struggled with the muses at times...

Summary
After more than 50 years, Spike has followed a hint that leads him to Xander's parents' house in sunnydale, where he finds his lover and bond-mate in a dishevelled but unharmed and unchanged state. The house is slowly being reconquered by nature, but there is no decay, only destruction by animals and natural forces.
Xander barely recognises Spike and seems to have lost coherent thought and the ability of speech, but manages to remember Spike's name somehow.
Scared and unsure what to do, Spike calls up Dawn and Willow, now co-heading the Watchers' Council, and they arrive and investigate the house, casting a spell to detect magic. They brought an important object along, and while they prepare for the spell, Spike tells Xander the story of their love and how they bonded in a ritual attended by all their friends.
After the spell has been cast, Dawn and Willow investigate the house again, and make a few interesting discoveries.
Stretching out a hand, Willow gently traced the runic sign with a finger. "I'm… not sure. Do you have a gauge or something in the van? We don't want to get our hopes up too early…"
Dawn just grinned and produced the requested instrument. "Check for yourself. I'm sure it will say the same as your fingers. Actually, take the depth of it, I'll write it down, then we can check and note down the others all around the house as well." She produced a notepad, and proceeded to take down the measurements Willow read out.
Chapter 19
Willow and Dawn finally returned to the kitchen, laden with books on runes, charts about sunrise and sunset times and locations, and various spell ingredients.
A brief glance into the living room had shown the two men curled around each other and fast asleep, and they quickly retreated to the kitchen. It was best to let them sleep, with any luck there would be a solution by the time they woke.
Comparing their records of the runes with both the sunrise and sunset positions and the Futhork rune alphabet, they settled in for a long research session. There had to be a reason why the runes where less deep on the southern side of the house.
By the time the sun set, Dawn felt her vision go blurry from the myriads of numbers. Even the runes seemed to blur together. The only rune standing out was the simple vertical line of "isa", the ice rune.
And then it hit her.
"Of course!" she exclaimed, slapping her forehead. "Willow, look at this! What do the rune on Xander's chest and the "beorc" rune on the windows have in common?"
Willow stared at her.
Then she hurried around the table to lean over Dawn's shoulder, looking at the sheet with the Futhorc, next at the rough sketch they'd made of the scar.
Her eyes widened.
"They both… have a straight vertical line… which is also the rune for "ice"." She beamed at her lover. "Brilliant, Dawn. That certainly explains why sunlight seemed to partially erase the "beorc" runes on the southern side of the house, and why Xander seemed to improve after rubbing the scar." She hugged Dawn tightly.
"I think that's it! This is what we need to deal with to make Xander all better!"
"What do we need to deal with to make Xander better?" A rough voice demanded from the doorway. "Anything I need to kill?" They looked at Spike, leaning against the doorjamb, Xander draped leisurely across his back but not paying attention to the women.
"Sorry Spike, nothing you can kill. This will need more mojo." Dawn apologised. "Though I think we can do it with a simple spell."
She turned to Willow. "I think the easiest would be to counteract the influence of "isa" with the force of the sun…"
Squinting at the paper with the scar drawing, she suddenly smiled. "And I think it will be easier than we expected. Look at this, Willow!" She followed the outline of the scar in a zigzagging motion.
"If we overlay it with the sun rune "sowilo" this way, and then again this way," she drew a second zigzag path across the paper, then I think we can reduce the influence of "isa" to a degree where it shouldn't have more than a tiny titbit of strength."
Willow vibrated with excitement, smiling hugely at Spike and Xander, who looked on with interest. The pleased little smile tugging at Spike's mouth was all the encouragement she needed, and she flew back to flipping through the books, hunting for the spell they needed to make this work.
