Part 12
Fidgeting under the curious gazes of the Scoobies, Giles began to explain.
"Erm, well yes, you see, the situation was…"
Ethan interrupted him. "Let me explain or we'll still be here this time next year." He spat out impatiently. "I was asked to…"
Giles coughed pointedly.
"Fine, I was forced by the Powers That Be to even the scales, do some good to satisfy Janus' other side so to speak. They told me to send the box with instructions on how to gain a powerful weapon to the Slayer. Not like I could do much. If they wanted to have a vampire and a bonded human, fine by me. All I did was set up the spell to carry you far enough away and safe, and make sure you didn't return until bonded."
Spike frowned slightly, and Xander felt a distinctly foreign angry mood wash over him.
Oblivious to the little interplay, Ethan continued. "And yes, Giles knew about this, even if he wasn't all that happy at first." He darted a sly look at the Watcher. "After all, I needed to make sure that you were chosen for this little trip, wouldn't want to spoil all my hard work after all.
"He figured it would be a good thing for you, "he continued, finally looking at Xander directly, "if you were bonded with Spike. Apparently, dear Rupert had noticed the sexual tension between the two of you as well, for it didn't take long at all to convince him." He smirked evilly, then leered at Giles. "Not that I didn't enjoy convincing him…
"Of course, you'd also get quite a bit of magical extras and whatnot, after all it was supposed to give the Slayer some additional help, not give Spike a new shag partner. You're basically a vampire yourself now, just with a heartbeat and without all those pesky disadvantages like that awful sunlight allergy. Which pretty much goes for Spike as well, only he still doesn't have a heartbeat." He added carelessly.
There was a moment of stunned silence before all hell broke loose.
"Bonded? Spike and I are bonded?"
"Giles knew?"
"You knew about this, Watcher?"
"What do you mean: Xander is a vampire now?" Willow practically screeched that last question, and Xander and Spike hurriedly covered their ears.
Only Tara remained quiet, observing silently how Xander and Spike remained pressed against each other underneath the blanket, a united front against the other occupants of the room.
