A Long Forgotten Kiss

Chapter 9

When Spike had realised the state Xander was in, he had called himself all kinds of stupid for not bringing along the one thing that bound Xander and him together for all time. But Dawn, bless her, had remembered that day over fifty years ago and brought along what he forgot in his hurry to maybe, finally, find his lover.

It lay in the middle of the hallway, a square silver metal box. Delicate lines decorated the top in a never-ending Celtic design, surrounding the infinity loop at the centre. The sides bore similar decorations, and nowhere on the whole box was a single loose end in sight. It was small, barely the size of a watch face, but beautiful in its simplicity.

Xander crouched low next to it. Hesitating, he stretched out a hand, almost touching it, but stopped millimetres from it to look at Spike for reassurance.

Spike smiled at him, love and support and anticipation shining in his eyes.

With gentle fingers, Xander cradled the little box and lifted it from the floor. Raising it to eye-level he turned it, inspecting it from all sides, before turning to Spike, unspoken question in his eyes.

Aware of the girls' eyes on them, Spike closed Xander's fingers around the box and made him tuck it securely into the only whole pocket on his ragged pants.

"Keep it safe for now, ok? I'll explain later."

Xander looked at him doubtfully but did not resist.

Once the box was safely out of sight, Spike turned to the girls, keeping a firm hand on Xander's shoulder, watching for any kind of negative reaction from his lover.

Xander, too, looked at them with wary eyes. He saw two slender women, one with full dark hair that showed only few grey hairs, the other a vibrant redhead with more than a trace of grey in her straight, short cropped locks. They didn't stir any memories, though he knew Spike, lover - mate, his inner voice supplied, had hoped they would.

His hand wandered to the pocket holding the metal box, touching its reassuring weight. The box was important, he knew. Bond-gift, his mind called it, and though he knew that wasn't entirely accurate, he couldn't come up with a better description. His memories were almost empty, nothing in there to search for hints. A tiny part of him wanted to stay this way, make everything but Spike, lover - mate his brain insisted on adding, go away. But he knew better than that, knew that he needed to remember, needed to break out of the trap that held his mind captured and suspended. If only he knew how.

Unconsciously, his free hand had wandered to the scar above his heart, tracing the lines without thought or intent. He didn't even realise his actions until Spike stiffened and gasped next to him.

Spike watched anxiously as Xander hunched next to the box, but smiled reassuringly when he hesitated to touch. It was fascinating to see his lover inspect the material confirmation of their bond from all sides, and when Xander looked at him again the question was plain in his eyes.

"Keep it safe for now, ok? I'll explain later." He said, helping Xander to tuck it safely away.

Xander's attention finally turned to the two women in the doorway. Spike realised sadly that Xander didn't recognise them, as he had feared from the beginning, but there wasn't much he could do about it now.

Instead, he watched them as they took in the young man's appearance, wonder on their faces as they acknowledged that he looked still the same as he did in their memories. He was peripherally aware of Xander's hand moving to touch the box in his pocket, dimly noted the other hand moving as well, but it wasn't until he saw Dawn's eyes widen that he looked to see what had upset her.

Xander's free hand was tracing the scar, plainly visible now in the electric light.

He stiffened and a surprised gasp escaped his throat at the same moment as Willow took a step forward to look closer.
