Dear mummy, dear daddy, I'm handsome, tall and strong

I was watching VH1's countdown of 40 worst videos of all time. Mostly they were working on the principle that 1980s=bad (the precise opposite of VH1's usual programming policy). But one standout was Tiffany's I Think We're Alone Now. I like this song quite a lot, and I even think Tiffany's kind of cute. But every single shot in the video is utterly awful, and she does truly random stuff like lean on an airplane wing or stand on some rocks in a river, when she's not singing in a shopping mall or dancing round in an unflattering hugely baggy jumper. The other compellingly shit video was Sinitta's So Macho, from her album snappily entitled "Sinitta!" ("if ever an album title was in need of an exclamation mark", to quote Half Man Half Biscuit [re Frampton Comes Alive!] but this is more desperate still), in which she runs through a huge range of awful outfits and lamentable comedy moments. In contrast, Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine's Dr Beat video, with her about to commit suicide wiggling madly atop some railings and lots of oddly-dressed medical staff, is excellent.

Number One was Take That's somewhat homoerotic and trifle-based Do What U Like.

Another thing I noted from pop music television. Madonna's best ever look in history is in the Papa Don't Preach video with the stripy french fisherman's shirt and short blonde hair that looks like she's just had a bucket of water poured over her head. Also excellent intro. This was part of E4's feisty females day, which also included that anthem of female empowerment Never Ever by the All Saints. What's wrong with I Know Where It's At? Because from second single Never Ever till last single Chick Fit every other All Saints song is about being messed up over a man. Or heroin.

Also do you remember in the late 1980s when it was fashionable for women to wear jeans that were baggy around the crotch? Also George Michael in 1982 was rocking the "skintight jeans tucked into black boots" look that all the fashion victims were wearing in 2006.

Award for most bizarre front page of newspaper sport section: The Guardian. To explain the story, Man Utd manager Alex Ferguson is blaming the crappiness of England under manager Steve McClaren on the negative atmosphere created by tv talent shows in which brutal criticism (of England's shit manager and crappy players) has become the norm.
