Summary: Dean and Castiel are going to be neighbors.
It was the first hot week of summer when Dean Winchester met Castiel Novak. Dean rinsed off from his shower and stepped out into the humid bathroom. He didn't towel off, preferring the cold wetness on his skin than the scalding heat outside. He wiped his hand across the mirror to clear off the steam and studied the imaginary stubble on his chin. After a long moment of silence in the house, Dean took out a shaving razor that he kept hidden from his brother. He found his father's cream and used it to lather his face, then began shaving away at the stubble.
"DEAN!"
The shout startled Dean, nearly causing him to fall over. The razor fell in the sink with a loud clatter. His brother had a hell of a voice on him, and now he was pounding on the door.
"Get out! I need to use the bathroom," Sam shouted, thumping his foot against the door. It sounded like a giant was trying to break in. If Dean didn't constantly remind Sam that he was the older brother, even Dean would think that Sam was the older one. He was already starting to grow taller than him.
Dean flung open the bathroom door, hoping to scare Sam off with his nudity.
"Dude, cover up," Sam said, shoving past Dean to get into the bathroom. He threw a towel at his brother, and Dean used it to wipe what shaving cream was left off of his face.
"Stop using Dad's stuff," Sam added.
"Need it for your legs, Sammy?" Dean quipped. It's not like Dad needed it, Dean thought to himself. His father was gone again and would be out for a few days. Even when he was home he only shaved his face once in a while.
Sam shoved him out the door and slammed it behind him.
Dean just laughed to himself and rolled his eyes, deciding not to harass Sam that day. For one, he wasn't in the mood to get into a fight, because Sammy was definitely in the mood to fight. Besides, when Sam needed the bathroom that badly, it meant the bathroom was going to be a biohazard for at least twenty-four hours. He walked aimlessly towards the kitchen, deciding he might find something to eat but when he approached the front of the house he was distracted by the sound of a running truck.
His father had a few paranoid qualities that rubbed off on his sons. Dean remained silent, stealthily moving in the house to get a vantage point on what was going on. From the window, Dean could see a large mover's truck parked in front of the house next door. A woman was buzzing around, setting boxes on the ground in an organized way. After a few minutes of watching her, Dean felt curious enough to stand fully in front of the window so he could watch the scene.
Their father had chosen the house for the lack of neighbors, but it looked like a good thing could never last. He wanted to ask Sam when this started going on, but didn't want to make him any angrier. Instead, he just stared out the window, watching the new neighbors lug boxes from the truck into the new house.
That was when Dean first saw him.
