If you don't know all of the characters, here's

Aeron Chival is a tattoo artist and a female connoisseur. He is the main character of The Chival Band. He lives in Boston with Arriana Muetare, is on/again off/again girlfriend. He believes that sex, is sex, and he's damn near addicted. He doesn't care whose mouth it belongs to, as long as it's wrapped around his member. He is the younger brother of Van Chival, and doesn't have heat when Arriana isn't living with him. He's lonely but he doesn't know any other way, and believes family is the most important fucking thing. He says fuck a lot.

Van Chival is 2-4 years older than Aeron. He lives in Northern California, and is married to Anne Tracey-Chival. She is currently pregnant with their first child. He is a police officer. He took care of raising Aeron after their mother died. He's been in gangs, prison, the army, and is tough on Aeron. Respect and discipline are a big thing with him. He shaved his head before Aeron did, but now it's growing back thick and curly, like his brothers. He isn't big on homosexuality, or anything kinky. He felt very paternal to Aeron growing up, although he was jealous of Aeron's artistic temperament and creative ability. He understood even as a small child that his mother worked very had and sacrificed for her boys. Van is a stand up citizen and a generally good person.

Arriana Muetare is a business woman. She's gorgeous and shark-like, both excellent qualities in the career she chose. Her point of view is rarely seen (first-person). She is mostly through Aeron's eyes. She's tall, leggy, and blonde, and totally Aeron's opposite. It's hard to see why she loves Aeron, and vice-versa, but his class and her beauty is a start. She travels a lot, and Aeron has taken full-advantage of that. They rarely sleep together. She doesn't value family very much at all.

Camillo Wong is a spin-off character from a (slash) short story. He lives/d in North. Calif. near Van. He had been arrested repeatedly by Van. and Van is his informal case worker. He met Aeron through Van, looking to get a tattoo. Camillo is gay. He is scruffy and dirty and doesn't have as much fashion sense as Aeron. He is a borderline alcoholic and he likes pain. A lot. Mind-games are fun for him, but he is very down to earth and real. Aeron and him have a torrent affair for a few months after Camillo is evicted from his place in Cali and shows up on Aeron's figurative doorstep broke and in many pieces. He's a totally slob but thoughtful. He has 4 piercings, and his entire back tattooed by Aeron. These are not the only body-modifications he has had during his life. He is 24.

Michelle Solange is a very minor character, practically a skeleton in Aeron's closet. There is a discrepancy in her character timeline, which eventually worked into her character, into the whole plot line and theme of the story. Aeron meets her right before he leaves his hometown of NYC. She is pregnant, and he is 19. He remembers her, but the next time he sees her (he visits her in Hawaii for a week; in another short story), she has an infant baby. It's almost been 7 years. This was fixed by the interjection of the idea that all Michelle wanted was her baby, and she has been trying for a very long time. There was slight speculation and foreshadowing that Aeron was the father of her baby boy, (Michel). The hints are there, but it isn't true. Michelle has a very sunny disposition, and her ethnic background is Japanese/Hawaiian. She is sweet and motherly, and deep down reminds Aeron of his own mother. Her point of view is not seen. She is only seen through Aeron's eyes.

Anne Tracey-Chival is Van's young wife. 5 years his junior, she looks up to Van to be her knight in shining armor. At least she used to. She is 5-6 months pregnant through most of the story line. She prays it will be a girl. A lot of her life is the way Van would like it to be. Despite the fact they are in love, to Van, marriage was just a route to a stable and rewarding life. The Chival name always meant a lot to him, and he is afraid of his many past mistakes coming up on him. Anne was raised in a family without much love or stability. The dinner table, church on Sundays, and Tupperware party life was a whole new battlefield for her, but she enjoys it. She used to be a painter. Her whole face lights up when she's smiles, but sometimes she goes into the bathroom and stares at herself for hours, wondering where her life went. Van doesn't listen as much as he used to.

Camille Chival was Aeron and Van's mother. With their father being a sperm donor, she was left to raise 2 children by herself. She grew up in the city, and the boys were raised in Yonkers in a small house. She put more pressure on Van to succeed, and be a leader to his brother as well as in life. She worked two and sometimes three jobs to get along, but the time she spent at home was efficient and valued. She was only in her late 50's when she died. Aeron was arrested (at the time he was 16 and in a gang) and she went to the police station, and was shot by a man who had just been brought in and wasn't completely searched for weapons. The police's terrible error won Van and Aeron quite a bit of money. They both think of her a lot, but never mention her. Sadness and mourning are weaknesses to both of the brothers.
