I don't think, even if the UK series had gone on for as long as the US one, that as long as Russell was the creative force, it would have changed all that much. I suspect that, like many British writers, Russell was far more comfortable about putting the characters and the storylines out there and letting viewers make up their own minds about them. While C/L felt compelled to climb on their soap box and tell everyone what they should be thinking.
I think you are very right about it/ If C/L at the beginning of the show wanted to be as QaF UK, they had to be stuck with this idea of showing the glimpses of several gay friends' lives, but no... And they ruined the wonderful love story... I am so very sorry about it...
I was watching some videos that have been taken right after the last shoot when Brian and Justin were saying goodbyes in the Brian's loft and there were Director and producer of the show talking... (I could not call them apart who is who), anyway one of them said something about Randy's always complains about Justin's character...
Well, seems Randy definitely was not that happy about the development of Justin's character.
Thanks for your post, it was a pleasure to read it and participate in discussion.

And can one blame him? Sigh.
I felt bad for both of them. And for Peter. I think his Emmett deserved better too.
As far as Justin was concerned, I suspect that Randy would have preferred that they either kept bj apart after Ethan, or let their relationship really grow.
Not that they would be kept on the same constant loop of break up/make up over the same old issues because C/L lacked the imagination to actually deal with them.
I think that they could have written real, character-based drama for them that didn't resort to yet another break up at least once a season. Goodness knows that they had enough real issues to deal with, and wouldn't it have been nice to see them learning how to deal with them together?
But no, break up/make up seemed to be the only plot line that C/L could think of to inject drama into the relationship.
And to make it worse, they couldn't seem to find a way in S5, to achieve the break ups and the make ups, without twisting the Justin character like a pretzel.
First, he's enjoying being an LA party boy, and he's not showing any signs of coming home soon.
Then he's home with Brian, and that's where he wants to be, but he's still partying.
Then he suddenly doesn't want to party any more, doesn't want Brian to party either, and wants to settle down and raise a family. (At twenty one, mind you!)
Then he wants to live on his own and be an starving artist in a garrett.
Then he wants to live like a prince in a big house and have a big wedding and all the trimmings.
Then he doesn't want Brian to stop partying any more.
Then he doesn't seem to care if Brian stops partying or not, because suddenly he doesn't want the wedding, the house or Brian, he wants to run away and live in a garrett and be a starving artist somewhere else.
I mean seriously! How is anyone supposed to play that character?

Poor Randy.
You are so right about whole scenario of S5! If I was in Randy's shoes I would be mad too...
As you said the whole ordeal about break ups/make ups wearies everybody out and certainly actors (Gale and Randy) who played main protagonists.
That is why I so like your story because you are trying to fix all that errors and mistakes C/L created! Bravo! I like your scenario much much better!! Thanks!!!
