I really do exist

Mar 10, 2013 17:48

I've had a couple of messages today from people effectively saying "I'm really glad I met you, because at least I know you're real".

If you don't know what triggered those ... you're lucky. Don't worry about it.

If you do, you may understand why I felt compelled to post this.

I'm real. I exist. And I'm pretty much as I purport to be on LJ.

I don't use my real name on my LJ. And I don't lightly give it out to people either.

Primarily because I have a naturally cautious streak I guess.

But also because I work for a company which has global clients, and I often have to deal directly with those clients, so I have to use some level of discretion when it comes to my public "profile".

One of our major client contacts, for instance, is a fundamentalist Christian. A couple of others are Muslim.

While I'm never afraid to air my views, I don't believe that I have the right to put client relationships at risk because some of those views (not to mention some of my writing *g*) would be considered extremely radical and unpopular with some people who are important to those client relationships.

So ... I don't use my real name here, and I barely use my Facebook and Twitter accounts at all.

But I am, as I've always indicated on LJ an Australian woman who lives in Melbourne, who loves theatre and icehockey and cats and music and who will probably never feel about another tv show as I did and do about QAF.

And there are lots of you out there whom I've met who can vouch for me.

There are lots more that I'd like to meet.

Most of all, I'd like to think that when I did, you'd be pretty much what you'd purported to be as well.

I don't have a problem with people writing under an alias.

I don't even have a problem with people creating a persona and writing as that person.

But when it spills over into other people's real lives, that's crossing a line.

I swear on all I hold sacred (including my abiding love for BJ), that I would never do that.

And that's all I wanted to say, really.
