Adventures in dog ownership

Aug 31, 2007 20:00

As many of you know, we have dogs.  2 wonderful golden retrievers with active lifestyles.  They've recently decided to become "Adventure Dogs" per
sebastian_tombs, as Oso (pictured above) has figured out how to open the porch gate since the latch broke.  We had temporarily prevented this, but our plans backfired for a number of reasons.

Wednesday I came home from work to find Oso in the back yard and
sebastian_tombs not home yet.  WTF?  So, I look around the yard to find one of the neighbor kids filling the baby pool for the dogs and Nieve soaking wet.  This particular instance the dogs had forced the screen door off its tracks to wander the wide world.  They had ended up next door playing with this kid's golden retriever, so he brought them home for me.  Good kid, safe dogs, need to remember to fix that gate.  Right.
Friday I had one of those days at work.  You know the kind - appointments booked solid 8:30am-11:30am, then 2 ferret surgeries (which can be 2 hours apiece) with appointments starting back up promptly at 2:30pm through until 4:30pm.  Made me wish for my roller skates.  I vaguely remembered hearing my cell phone ring as I rushed from room to room, but I didn't get a break to actually check the messages until after 10am.  "Hi, this is K at #blah on your street, I have 2 golden retrievers with your name on them" Thank the deities for name tags!  Not to mention rabies tags, microchip tags, you name it, they are wearing them.  I got calls from 2 vet hospitals and the chip folks.  I certainly couldn't leave work,
sebastian_tombs had just gotten to work after a late night - another neighbor to the rescue.  Our immediate next door neighbor loves the dogs and was luckily at home when I called.  She was very willing to pick up said dogs and let them in the house (she has a house key for these sorts of occurences, we have one for her house as well).  Lovely people.  I was able to call
sebastian_tombs to let him know the miscreants were safe.
After work and dinner, we picked up flowers for the neighbors.  We had a lovely visit with the folks next door when we dropped them off.  She protested that we didn't need to do anything, but the sheer peace of mind was worth much more than a bouquet - silly dogs.  At some point we will do the same for the other neighbor, who we haven't even met yet.  My neighborhood may have issues, but it has some really good people, too.
