Day 1413 Sherlock Holmes and Ferris wheels
One of the things I notice the most about the opening credits of Sherlock is, naturally, The London Eye. For some reason, it seemed vaguely appropriate even though it was not in place at the time of the original Sherlock stories.
Or was it?
In doing a little research (I'm a girl of odd enthusiasms), I discovered that the London Eye was certainly not there... but The Great Wheel was built in Earl's Court a few years after the first publication of Sherlock Holmes and remained in place until a few years before the last publication.
Built in 1894, the Earl’s Court Great Wheel stood 300 metres high and could carry 1600 passengers (40 cars- 40 people per car). The Wheel was demolished in 1907.
So visualizing Sherlock Holmes' London should include a giant Ferris wheel even in Victorian times.
