Yeah, working at a pet store may have finally gotten to me....
It really all started at the vet, I had taken Selphie to a new vet for reasons unrelated to nutrition that I won't go into, and the vet suggested I put her on prescription food because she had had bladder stones in the past. Now, I know she doesn't digest certain things well, and they're really things no dog digests perfectly. These certain ingredients can be found in the majority of food out there for dogs, and are basically used as fillers to make the food cheaper. Corn of any sort, and wheat of any sort are what many dog foods mostly contain. These ingredients are not easily digested by dogs, and many dogs are often allergic to them. Selphie pukes them up.
SO, I check out this prescription food can and lo and behold, corn and wheat. I scoured the internet for healthier alternatives to little avail, but discovered a few ways I could help her be more healthy overall. One is getting more water into her system in order to prevent bladder stone buildup. So, I plan on getting her a water fountain eventually, and I'm now more closely examining alternative food choices....
I made some of my own today...
I started by cooking a 1/2 cup of brown rice and boiling a boneless chicken breast in water, after the rice was done and the chicken almost done I put the rice in the chicken's water and added 1/4 cup of frozen peas. I finished cooking it all, drained the water, and placed the water and the chicken-mix in separate tupperware containers. I plan on giving it mixed with Nutro Ultra (the hard food she eats now) for Small Dogs, the broth poured on top, and Selphie's usual supplement of glucosamine/chondroitin.
I plan on doing this occasionally and adding more recipes. I'm also gonna try just taking her on walks more often too, since I need the excercise as much as she does...
