My first day of portfolio was yesterday, it's gonna be an intense class fosho. 16 weeks of stuff crammed into 11 weeks. Fuuuuuuun....
Hopefully it will help me a bit with figuring out WTF to do with myself once I graduate, and give me the tools to make a proper leavebehind and portfolio, rather than walking in a bit a big-ass art binder full of poster board... I have a few options for after I graduate, I just have no idea which one is best for me...
Option 1- Pursue MORE school and get a bachelor's in graphic design at Texas State. I guess I could have a part-time GD job on the side of this, but part-time GD jobs don't really exhist...
Option 2- Open my own business and work out of home/rent an office. ....yeah. I can't even rent/buy my own place to live right now, so I guess it would be work out of home. Although an office would give me an opportunity to make an awesome office fish tank... I'm thinking an oscar tank would be amazing in an office. Anyway... yeah, don't really have the money for the office thing. But maybe do some freelance jobs out of home? Thing is, I have no idea how to FIND people who need a freelancer, and are willing to pay the right price for it...
Options 3- Get an in-house/design firm job. These seem interesting, and a good start. In-house is popular now due to he recession apparently, and firms are a very competitive work environment, which I don't think I would like...
Things I'll need to do: Get involved in some graphic design group and other groups maybe. Perhaps I'll join AIGA this year, while I'm still a student, or perhaps I'll lurk on their website for a while... Also, there's a betta breeders group forming in Austin that I'm aware of, perhaps that would be worthwhile to look into. Not design related, but jobs may come form it... Too bad I don't have any real room for betta breeding... (If I did I'd be breeding my wilds...)
