Change
Chapter One

Title: Change
Pairing: Ennis/Jack
Rating: PG-13 (for now, no smut).
Summary: (AU) Jack's terrible incident with the tire rim miraculously does not result in death.
Credit: Annie Proulx created these wonderful characters and the story of Brokeback Mountain. I am just changing it a bit, for fun :-)

Notes: This is my first real fan fiction that I have posted for others to read (I've written a ton of stuff that has never seemed worthy). Also, I am an optimistic, glass half-full kind of person, but that does not mean this story will have a happy ending. Truth be told, I have no idea if it will. I almost don't know where this story is really going. It was just an idea I had. I sound so inexperienced, but it is the awful truth! If anyone has any advice on how to write a good fan fiction, how to post, and other little things someone like me should know, please feel free to inform me!

Note for this chapter: I took what I read in the story, that the tire rim was what happened. Not the symbolic tire iron. Yeah. Oh, and I know NOTHING about changing tires. Looked it up online, but still... oh well! Oh, and it is short. Thought it would be good to cut it off, though.

Hope you enjoy!

Jack slammed the truck door shut in rage. Another bloody flat tire, another annoying problem, another little thing to set him ablaze with furry. That's how it was, now. Everything set him off. The world was cruel, letting him suffer so.

It was flat, for sure. Saggy and limp. With a huff Jack retrieved his tire-changing kit and spare out of the trunk of his car and in a short time had removed the worthless tire and was replacing it with a sturdy new one.
He had done it tons of times before, changing a tire. Nothing too complicated. He was in the new truck, sure, but that didn't stop him. He didn't think it was any different, didn't think there was any special requirements for the amount of pressure or heat that the tire could sustain.

So, when in the middle of tightening the third lug nut, Jack was taken by surprise when the tire exploded, knocking the tire rim and wrench into his chest and face. He cried out in shock and pain, hearing and feeling a crack as the rim slammed into his nose. His head hit the ground, and he knew no more.

When Jack came to again, there was noise all about him. He was on his side, and could feel blood trickling down his face, splattering and gushing onto the dirt below. His mouth was barely open, air going in and out in short gasps.

The noise all about him registered as voices and sirens. Before he would gasp out a word, a question, he felt a sharp prick in his arm, and he was gone once more.

"...Turns out, ma'am, that a man drove by and saw him. Must'a been a minute or so after it happened, or else Jack here would not be in this room..." The doctor finished the story briskly to Laureen as they walked into the room.

Lureen nodded, dropping her purse and jacket on a chair, sitting down on the edge of the bed. Jack was asleep, having just been out of a two hour surgery on his nose. It was oddly bandaged up, as it were. Probably swollen and purple, she thought. Lureen sighed, shook her head, popped her chewing gum.

"When will he be awake and moving?" Lureen asked after a moment.
"A few days, I believe. Besides his nose, and head having come in contact with the ground, hard, he should be fine. The rest of his body seems to be perfectly intact and unharmed."
"Good," Lureen stated, looking out the hospital window to the streets below.

"Is there anybody you would like us to contact about the accident? We would be happy to, it isn't uncommon now 'a days." The doctor asked.

"Ennis..." Jack's voice cut the silence. He was awake now, eyes blinking a few times, voice tight and airy.

"Oh, he's awake already!" The doctor walked briskly to his side, poured a glass of water from a plastic pitcher. "Thirsty?" He asked, sticking a straw inside the icy water-filled cup.

"Ennis," His voice was stronger now. He was staring at Lureen, ignoring the doctor.

"Oh, that fishing buddy of yours. What about him?" Lureen's brows wrinkled together in confusion.
"Contact him, about the accident." He looked a Lureen pleadingly.
"Alright, then," she said slowly.

The doctor put the glass of water back on the table quickly with a thud.

"Well, how do you feel, Mr. Twist?"
"Headache, and my nose feels strange. What did you do to it?"
"Well, you were in an accident..."
"I know that, sir. What did you do to it?" Jack felt impatient and moody, the drugs wearing off quickly.
"Reconstructive surgery. Your bone was severely broken, but we put it all back in place. It should look like it did before it broke. Will take about ah' month of healing before the swelling and bruising go down, though."

"Damn," Jack whispered, bringing a hand to feel the strange plaster cast resting on his nose.

"Well, I have some other sick people to attend to. I'll have a nurse in here soon to up the pain killers. Mrs. Twist? There are some papers to sign, so please find me later and we can get that all done."
"Thank you," Lureen smiled lightly as the doctor left.

There was a stretched silence between the couple, neither sure what to say.

"Bobby is still at school. Didn't want to pull him out," Lureen stated suddenly.
"Yeah. It's fine. I would rather no one saw me like this. I must look like shit." Jack sighed, a strange smile on his lips.

Lureen wanted to smile, wanted to laugh, like any other wife in love with her husband would have. She would have probably leaned over and kissed his cheek, told him he looked fine.

But she didn't.

Lureen unlocked the door to her house, flicking on the lights and dropping her keys on the mud room table. Bobby tramped in afterwards, holding the mail and his backpack.

"When can I see dad, mommy?" Bobby asked, dropping his backpack with a thud.
"Tomorrow, I guess." Lureen said, making her way to the kitchen. Bobby came along, put the mail on the table, and began making himself a snack.

Lureen grabbed a water bottle from the fridge, then went to her office. She opened the first drawer and pulled out a large address book. It had been a gift from her father, and she and Jack had put important address' inside its pages. She began flipping through it, trying to find anyone by the name of Ennis. It was no surprise to her that his name was not there. With a sigh she slammed the book shut and went back to the kitchen to shift through the mail.

After throwing multiple bills into a pile, Lureen was shocked to find a postcard amid the plain white envelopes. The picture was a stunning mountain landscape, with green grass and a bright blue sky.

It was from Ennis del Mar, and had his address written clearly for her to use.
