my school library had a great series of books - i don't remember what it was called but there were three of them and they documented banned and challenged books and told you where they had been challenged and why. so that is why i know that Blubber, by Judy Blume, was banned/challenged (i don't remember which) in Montgomery County, Maryland public schools (my district) because it showed kids being "cruel" to each other and not being punished for it (i'll let you make of that what you will).

i'd like to think that so many banned books are assigned in school because teachers are championing free speech, but i know it's really because it's primarily books assigned by schools that get challenged/banned. I feel all nostalgic now... I had to look up some of these to figure out if i'd read them or not and i found others. anybody read:

the Barthe DeClements books (Fourth Grade Wizards, How Do You Lose Those Ninth Grade Blues, Sixth Grade Can Really Kill You, etc)
The Wind Blows Backward by Mary Downing Hahn
Alan and Naomi by Myron Levoy
Interstellar Pig/Bifurcation by Williams Sleator...
or, ooh, The Witch of Blackbird Pond... Anna to the Infinite Power...

Young Adult Fiction is awesome. ::contemplates filling my bookshelf with cheap YA paperbacks off ebay::
