"It is survivable you know."

"Says the man who faked his own death."

"Tea! Honestly, Old Thing, do have tea in the morning." he settles next to me, the seat opposite being taken by a contract builder who sits, phone in hand awaiting a text of importance.

"I was informed that your shins required a kicking for your conduct lesson."

"I am aware. I was there."

"I know."

"I know you know." he beams.

"Are you high?" I narrow my gaze at him but he merely changes his smile from stupid to honest.

"Not even remotely, Old Thing." he starts to ferret in his pockets and looks away. "Since you don't venture abroad I can assume that we don't need to concern ourselves with Switzerland."

"One should never concern himself with Switzerland unless escaping from a POW camp on a motorbike."

"Making up words!"

"Pop culture reference!"

"Person!"

He watches TV and films but doesn't really take them in and, to be honest, I don't think I've watched The Great Escape since he turned up, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

There are, however, words on my lips; spiteful words that he doesn't deserve but which threaten to form none the less. There are words like "why should you care" and "what do you know". The first is hurtful, the second simply foolish. When one is hurt, one often seeks to hurt others.

"Good old Watson." he smiles again.

"What?"

"Your self reason is much like his and as easy to read."

I make to growl.

"It wasn't meant as offence." he offers.

I look at him, really look at him as he continues to search his numerous pockets.

"He understands you." I mutter.

"What's that?"

"I was positing a theory. I'm not sure it's a good one."

"That has never stopped the Yarders." he shrugs and finally produces his black clay pipe which he inspects.

"You're very smiley today." I narrow my gaze at him once more. "What are you up to?"

"Currently? Assessing my pipe and searching for matches. Generally? Keeping you company and away from the falls."

"I'm not suicidal."

"I never suggested you were. However, your mind is want to wander and it has a fondness for the dark."
