Title: -
Author: hive_mind_d86 and ravenous ferrets
Rating: PG I guess what with lack of porn.
Pairing: Todd/Ronon
Warnings: Contains kids from Childhood's End
Summary: Last Man verse, aka the great expanse of time in that canon AU where There Is No Shepperd. 620 words. Not completely angsty.
And another thing: Can't think of a title but I'm open to suggestions. This was Kiku's request and since she seems to like it I am realising it on wraithsteve.........also it's been raining for *far* too long........
He shouldn’t have been on duty, they should have left Keras or Aires as sentry instead, Cleya was too young, too highly strung, too scared of the noises in the dark. His first reaction was to scream. His second was to empty his P-90 in a wide spray at the local flora.
Casta was right; there wasn’t really a quicker way to get pulled off sentry duty.
Which was why they were in a tree, lying flat against the branches, as close to the edge as they dared straining to hear, to get a glimpse of the stranger under his dark hood-
Because there wasn’t a much quicker way to get in the Commander’s bad books then almost shooting the man he had a meeting with.
He walked slowly, steadily; Cleya had thought it was formality until Casta whispered that it must be an old wound. And she was probably right because he sat a little heavily in his place by the fire.
For a long time no one had spoken, the full growns had all just stared. The Colonel had got to his feet, given the stranger a drink and if anyone had noticed his hand shake they didn’t say anything.
“What are you doing here?” The Commander had demanded his voice a little louder and a little harsher than usual.
“You need to leave this planet.” The stranger had rumbled; his voice was deep and scratchy.
Anlin had started to say something; the Commander had glared her down.
“The base on Sel-Han was destroyed two days ago. Michael’s forces will be here soon-”
He had more to say, but the elders had talked over him all at the same time in a rush that turned to little more than angry hissing by the time it reached the trees. The Commander had turned to the stranger for a moment-
They waited it out.
The Commander had asked a question, more quietly so even Casta hadn’t caught it.
The stranger shook his head. “I received information on a conversion facility. The planet formally belonged to the Hoffans but the Hybrids appear to be unaware of the presence and extent of the underground caverns-”
Solen had cut in, the stranger had growled-
And the Commander had ordered everyone else to leave.
They sat in silence for a while.
“You find anything yet?” The Commander asked finally.
“John Shepperd is gone. Teyla Emmagan is dead. Dr McKay is no longer in this galaxy.”
The Commander snorted. “Yeah I heard about that.”
“I understand that Samantha Carter is also-”
“Six months ago.”
The stranger smiled. “Has it occurred to you Ronon Dex that we may soon be the-”
“Last ones left?”
The stranger nodded.
From the trees two gangly teenagers watched their Commander and a man they’d never seen before sit in silence at the camp fire.
From the ground they would have seen their Commander’s feet kick awkwardly at the dust around the fire, the way the stranger’s eyes skipped from the ground to Ronon’s face and back again.
They would have seen the stranger’s ragged white hair, his yellow eyes and the tattoo carved like a sun burst around his eye.
They would have heard their Commander whisper, in a tone that was almost tender, words that were definitely not.
“I should kill you.”
They sat in silence for a long time.
“You should leave.” The Runner said finally.
“As you wish.” The Wraith agreed.
They both rose at the same time, stepped towards each other in a way that could almost have been accidental.
They stood for no more than a second with their foreheads just touching before the Runner pulled away and the Wraith vanished back into the forest.
