Summary: What if Rodney had died when John shot him? Drabble for Phantoms. John and Rodney friendship only - not slash.

John looked at the gun in his hands, reflecting on what he’d done. He’d killed Rodney; killed his best friend. That sin was unforgivable.
The mission was screwed up from the start. So many men dead, so many lives ruined.
John had written a letter to Rodney’s sister, explaining that Rodney was gone and that he’d died a noble death. But it was a lie. His death was pointless, and completely John’s fault.
He lifted the gun, staring down its barrel. “I’m sorry, Rodney” he whispered, his voice full of grief.
He drew one last breath.
And pulled the trigger.
