So I am in Pensacola now for the rest of July, and into August. Every time I come back to visit for more than three days it reminds me why I can never live here again. I like the city, but it isn't one that is very welcoming to the way I think anymore. I applaud Joe's attempt to make sure there area is as welcome as possible with his work in the ACLU.
I still don't have my car back. The date told to me initially was the 13th, so we are beyond that. They are keeping me up to date though, and it should be ready soon (perhaps). They got the final piece they needed to install and were supposed to be putting it in the other day. However, when the adjuster called she informed me that the shop as of that time had not been able to start my car. That worries me as it is a Prius we are talking about, and the electrical systems are really the entirety of the car. So we'll see what happens, it really will be quite amusing if they put in so much work to try and get it fixed, and then it ends up that it is unrepairable. The bigger concern is how I will economically get back to my car and get it here, especially if it takes much more time.
FSU says I owe them money, from 2004. That is crazy, especially since they claim it is tuition. I am trying to get that straightened out, especially since the College of Law needs to register me soon, and there is a stupid financial block in my file. I am trying to get it straightened out.
Oh, and before I forget, Crazy Congratulations to
Seiryu_16 for her promotion to Junior Developer at wonderful game house Obsidian! I promise I'm working on a guest strip for you, and hopefully you will have it before I start law school ;-)
Now for my thoughts on the
First, Superman. I have to give it to Brandon Routh, he did a pretty great job. I will also say that the Special FX were pretty superb, it was the first time that I could really buy into the whole human flight thing. The space shuttle/airplane sequence was phenomenal, one of the most exciting and well executed action sequences in recent memory. The opening credits were good in they prepedared you for a Superman movie, but they were WAY long, and we get it Bryan Singer, you had a lot to do with the movie, it doesn't mean you need to put your name in the credits like 12 times. I cannot truly blame Kevin Spacey for the horrid Lex Luthor. I think he had a better understanding of the character than what we saw on screen, and I blame the writers and Singer and the editor for the hodgepodge Luthor that we had to endure. I love Gene Hackman, but the 70s Superman Lex Luthor is not the Lex Luthor that is now in the DC Universe. Also, Kate Bosworth was terribly miscast as Lois Lane. The worst part of the movie was in fact the script. The main conflict of the story was just told in the comic book (at least the same basic concept.) And was told as part of a much more compelling story. I believe that the comic story arc came along well before the wonder twins and their boss Singer came up with their script as the comic was the kick-off of the aftermath of the biggest shake-up in the DCU in 20 years, so I have to believe that the story idea was in comic form first. As for the personal side of the story, the side that really should pose more of a threat/challenge to the Man of Steel...well...WTF? A superbaby? What the hell is that? Where did that idea come from and who thought it was a good idea? Whoever it was should be beaten. So overall, Superman was a disappointment, but I'll take some of it.
Second, Pirates. This movie in all but two aspects was a disappointment. One, the graphics were really good. I commend ILM on their effort. The only spot I thought was shaky were any of the close-up composite shots of the Kraken. The other aspect in which it did not fail me was Kiera Knightly, especially in her "no really, I'm a man" outfit. Rowr. I think my main issue with the movie is that it was trying WAY too hard to keep the same jokes from the first movie running in the second. I don't think we pushed the development of any of the characters anywhere. I thought towards the start of the film we would get a truly independent Elizabeth Swann, but any hope of that happening was destroyed by her temper tantrum on the beach. And when it comes down to it, all of her actions had the underlaying motivation of pleasing/being reunited with a man. So meh. The movie felt long, it felt like they knew they didn't really have enough for two more movies, so it stalled for time. I mean it was good, but it didn't have the magic of the first.
Also, on the note of disappointing movies...Transformer...where the hell did this crap about Mars come in? Bah!
Well, I'll go see Clerks II this Friday, maybe it can use its cynicism to make me less cynical about the movies. Maybe not.
Well, that is all for now kiddies, catch you later
