Last night saw the start of 'Being Human'. After a very well recieved pilot on BBC3 last year, it's now got a 6-episode series. Joy!
How does one describe it? It's sort of World of Darkness the sitcom - but in the same sense that Shaun of the Dead was a sitcom. Is it a comedy with gore or a horror film with laughs?
Anyway, essentially a Werewolf and a Vampire share a flat in Bristol with the ghost of it's former owner.
I still found my attention wandering during the vampire bits. I'm just bored shitless of vampires - especially as there's nothing new about them in this. They're just bog-standard screen vampires. All black clothing, spite and/or angst with members of their secret society in high places etc etc. Werewolves equally are not creatures that have ever interested me greatly but I can watch Russel Tovey in anything. He's effortlessly magnificent whatever he does.
The most interesting character - simply because it's not been done to death, is the ghost. However, the vampire and the ghost have been recast since the pilot which is a shame because I really liked the girl playing the ghost in the pilot. I think she nailed the character much more succinctly than the new girl and she had a much more forlorn presence.
Ah well, inspite of these niggles, it was superbly written and acted and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.
I'm still reading A Writer's Tale and thoroughly enjoying it. It is fascinating seeing how far in advance ideas are formed and actors are sounded out, before we get to hear about it. I'm really not buying the idea that being a (script) writer is hard though. Being riddled with self doubt/self loathing and terminal procrastination might be hard but that's got nothing to do with writing. Typing up around 300 words over the course of a weekend really isn't an achievment in anyone's books - except maybe Mr Davies'.
Perhaps I need to walk a mile in his shoes. Or maybe I'm just insanely jealous that he's in charge of Doctor WHO and I'm not :)
