... About my kid's TV shows that probably shouldn't.
Kid's television is on at our house way too much. I'm not very good when it comes to that whole "2 hours a day" of TV. I really do try, but frankly I like to have on the TV for noise, and while I can putz around in the kitchen with the TV going and not be horribly distracted my kids have not yet developed that ability. Since I really don't care much what my TV is saying to me, it's often switched to one of the kid's programs. Some kid's shows are just straight out annoying, there are a few that I draw a hard line on and will not watch because they rub me the wrong way *cough*
Colby's Clubhouse*cough* Other shows are more devious. I watched or listened to them for months before I realized that there was something off, and it took even longer for me to figure out what it was that was bugging me.
Here's a list of things that took me a while to catch onto, but now really irritate me every time I see it.
Sid the Science KidI'm not sure where Sid's parents found a school with a 4:1 student:teacher ratio, but I can get over that one. What really bugs me, is that Miss Suzie doesn't ever have a lesson plan. Every single thing that they talk about at school, every experiment, and every field trip, is all based off of some question that Sid comes up with in that morning before breakfast.
Jane and the DragonThis one has a unique style of animation that sorta irritated me at first, but it grew on me after a while.
There's actually a couple things that bug me about this show. The first one I noticed is that this "Kingdom" has very few people in it.
The king, queen, prince, and princess.
Two nights, two squires (One of whom is Jane)
One lady in waiting who doubles as the nanny (Jane's mom) One chamberlin (Jane's dad)
A jester
A blacksmith who is also the stable boy
A gardener
A cook
A merchant (who is the other squire's dad)
and a dragon.
Sometimes other people are mentioned, usually farmers and occasionally other kingdoms, but they are never-ever shown.
The other one that took longer for me to figure out took a bit of time to figure out, and it's much more devious. On the surface it's a "Girls can do anything boys can do" show. Jane is the first girl ever to be allowed to be a squire. But that's not the case. A girl can be a knight IF she has a dragon to help her every step of the way. I have no idea why it took me so long to realize this fact! I mean it's clearly stated in the lyrics of the theme song:
Jane and the Dragon are best friends now
Dragon's sweet, he let me save the young Prince
Then the King made me a Knight apprentice
Hey now hey now now...
With Dragon's help I'll be a Knight someday
