For a majority of wild pets with multiple breeds, I'm not too concerned about min-maxing. I do focus on obtaining the "right" breeds for pets that I want to use for battling though, especially since breeds in PvP can make a huge difference in the success of the team. I've a little stockpile of flawless battle stones, I can focus on obtaining pets with the right breeds and then upgrading them to rare quality with a stone.
I have 100+ level 25 pets, I've leveled 8 alts from 85-90 through nothing but pet battles, I've beaten every trainer in the land multiple times... and I never paid any attention to breeds.
This comment isn't intending to say that breeds aren't important, more that I'm a lazy slacker who never did the research into what it all means. Heck, it was only a few weeks ago that I even understood what people meant by breeds!
I'd enjoy if they introduced breeding to the game, especially if you could breed cross-species (I know that won't happen, but it'd be fun to cross a toxic wasteling with a siamese cat and get some kind of green gloopy cat-shaped thing with a bunch of beast and poison moves.)
I do not have that many level 25s (yet), but I, too, have done fairly well for my own entertainment, 100% clueless about breeds. Can't figure out whether I want more health, attack, or speed. Eh, whatever.
I totally love T_W's suggestion. Toxic Siamese Kitten! (Hey, you've seen the green glowing kittens IRL, right?) That being said, since my hubby is completely OCD about breeds, I have probably learned more about them than some, particularly when it comes to good battle pet ones. As far as completing my pet collection goes, I take the first blue, and if at some later point I need a different breed, I figure I can go back and hunt more. I've learned a lot from him :-) He's good for interesting pet combos. He has a team that can easily take out most of the Legendaries. He's shown me the moves on how to level 2 pets at a time on certain Pandaria trainers. I am starting to get some of the better pvp pets closer to being usable.
But hey that reminds me, I got a second JiKun hatchling from LFR recently. Would anyone have some spare tiny carps, the direhorn from Throne of Thunder, or the Normal/Heroic wasteling pet from Primordius that they'd like to trade for it? Figure I'd ask here before I take it to the forums at wow pets.
Not to hijack this comment thread but I think that'd be really helpful! Personally I do a lot of the old raids for pets and I always have spares available, and it'd be awesome to have a place to give those pets away here to people who need them. :D

Sadly, I have none of those pets to trade. :(
