Free online college course - Video Games and Learning

Apr 21, 2013 02:02

Hi all :)

I took this course as an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin, so yes, it is indeed real!

I know some members here do research on video games, etc. and probably know the names Constance Steinkuehler and Kurt Squire. They're the professors of this course! I know when I first saw this class pop up as being offered one semester, my reaction was along the lines of "a;sldkfja;sdfjkasd;f" and I made an entry long, long ago to WoW Ladies. It sparked some interest back then, so I figured I'd post it here in case anyone is interested :3

From the course description: "In this course, we will discuss current research on the kinds of thinking and learning that goes into videogames and gaming culture. We’ll investigate the intellectual side of digital gameplay, covering topics that range from perception and attention in Left 4 Dead 2 to the development of historical understanding in Civilization to collaborative learning in massively multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft."
