I'm our healing officer and we have a separate healing channel for the healers to communicate in, without having to use raid chat/vent. This way we can have our own conversations while also listening to the raid leaders. I don't raid lead but I do give them feedback on whether our healers are doing something wrong or whether it's the fight/the fight mechanics or strat that is making the encounter difficult or impossible to heal. I feel like I know my healers and their healing styles pretty well and assign them accordingly. Our guild leader and raid leaders can also see that channel if they wish.
Communication with your fellow healers and raid leaders is very important. Ask them for their input instead of just assigning them. As we get more comfortable with the encounter and I know our healers could do any role fine (or it's a boss that's on farm) I'll ask them what they would rather do. If it's been a rough night or we're trying to get through the farm encounters quickly to get to the progression point, I'll put the healers in their "usual" roles instead of changing them up because I know that's what works and what they know. If you're puzzled over something going wrong in the fight, ask their input. They may see a dps not doing their job or a tank facing the boss in the wrong direction that you don't and you can pass that input on to your raid leaders (or, since you are the raid leader, take it into suggestion). Also, I've noticed our healers are more likely to say they've done something wrong either in a whisper to me or in that healing channel because they know that the audience is somewhat smaller than over vent or in raid chat. I prefer, personally, not to "call people out" in the healing channel but if I think they're doing something incorrectly, correct it in a whisper. It's been more effective for me and my healers. :)
I also highly recommend reading up on the specs/classes and their strengths for each individual fight. Take Ultraxion for example, when DS was progression and new, I knew and assigned our healers to each crystal after reading which specs/classes gained the most benefit from each. Information like that is good to have on hand. If I'm supposed to be a leader, I should know those things, not have to be told what our roles should be by say a tank or a dps who read about it (but that's just how I see *my* role, if you're okay with that that's fine).
