I've been dual boxing for the last month, and this is what I'm doing. I tried out several free options and I found HotkeyNet to be the easiest to use. I'm not exactly stupid with computers, and it's actually the only one I got to even work for me, who knows why. The site even gives you a script that is written specifically for playing two WOW accounts on one machine. All this program does is capture what keybind you use while one window of WOW is open and then sends it to the other window. You can probably imagine my glee when using it for the first time and I hit my Faerie Fire button on my druid and my priest automatically bubbled the druid. It was awesome.

I also suggest the WOW addon Jamba (it's on Curse), which does a whole TON of things involving quest and toon interaction in-game. I find it very handy, but no matter what, you'll still be tabbing back and forth for things like looting quest items ( ... )

I did some Googling, and found hotkeynet. I tried to set it up, using the scripts given, and failed hard. I got as far as copying the script into a text document and trying to load it into the program. It loaded, but with what looked like a ton of errors. I am not very computer proficient (at least when it comes to writing software/understanding technical aspects of them). I read through the wiki and it was like reading a foreign language. Lol I think I need a multi boxing for dummies guide.

Now that I've had some coffee and lunch in me, I decided to try Hotkeynet again. Here is what I've managed to do so far:

I went to the quick start guide for WOW, copied the page into a word document, (this page: http://www.hotkeynet.com/wow/wow-sample-two-on-one.html ) saved it, then opened hotkeynet and loaded that page as "load script". What happened is I got 63 errors. The summary reads:

Finished loading hotkey file.
63 errors were found
0 definitions were loaded
0 keys will be used as modifiers

Command line: AutoExec
Unable to find command AutoExec

Scrolling up and looking at each line, there is the same error: text was found outside <> symbols; that's not allowed.

Do you by chance have any idea where I went wrong? I don't know if it matters or not, but I did not have either of my wow windows open.

Thanks.

Hmmm, that's odd, because when I copy that page exactly, I get:

Finished loading hotkey file.
No errors were found
60 definitions were loaded
1 key will be used as a modifier

Command line: AutoExec
Unable to find command AutoExec

Maybe it's a silly question, but when you say word document, what do you mean exactly? What program did you use? The script needs to be saved as a text document, with .txt as the file type. Typically created with Notepad. That is the only reason I can see that the file would have things outside the <>s.

Try this, here's a link to the file I use.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/79361945/script.txt

It's a *very* simple version of the one on the website, only binding 0-9, minus, plus, z, and the arrow keys. I don't actually use the arrow keys, I find /follow easier. If this loads without errors, (which it should since it's the actual file I use) the program will only do it's thing when scroll lock is on and if you have your WoW windows named WoW1 and WoW2, which is easily done with the script by hitting Ctrl Alt L with HotkeyNet running and scroll lock on.

(Note, I have z set because I have that used in-game as the Jamba use quest item keybind.)

I used Microsoft Word to save the page. The extension on that document is .doc. Maybe that's the problem.

Could be. Word processing programs like to have background formatting text that would probably show up in HotkeyNet.

Try loading the script I linked. It should load fine. Though there is a section that requires the file path for Wow.exe. Right now that is set for the Windows 7 location, so if you're not running W7, I can help you fix that if you need to.

I know it seems like a pain, but it's a free program, so you gotta do the setup yourself. You'll feel pro once you're done, and it'll work and you'll be happy. :)

I was able to get the document loaded. I had it saved under the wrong file type. Thank you so much for thinking about that.

My next noobie question is: now that Hotkeynet is loaded, how do I get it to work in game? Am I missing a step? I turned on the program, turned on my two wow's, grouped up, but only the character I am actively controlling responded to keyboard commands. Did I miss something?

In order for HotkeyNet to do its thing, with the script that you are using, you have to have scroll lock on. The different WoW windows also have to have different names, WoW1 and WoW2, according to the script. The easiest way to have them renamed is by pressing Ctrl Alt L to have it automatically open the two windows for you.

And another dumb question ... when I log onto wow, my game is not called WoW1. It is called something else, a name created way before the current bnet way to log in. My raf account is called WoW2. Do I still need to have the file named WoW 1 and WoW 2?

What they mean there, is the name of the WINDOW- the frame around which the wow game exists on your desktop- not the account. Thre should be a guide on their site that shows you how to rename the windows, as well as how to launch 2 WoWs at once properly named.

I saw the guild on how to rename windows, but it was one of those things that didn't make sense. I didn't see any windows to rename.

I just figured it out. I needed to launch the game twice first, then rename the windows. Will I need to rename the windows each time?

Ugh. I think this is turning out to be a tougher project than I thought it would be.

I was able to rename the 2 windows, but I still can't get character 2 to work in tandem with character 1. For some reason, the program is disabling my keyboard, so I am having to click on the action bar. Is this normal, or did I screw something else up? To test, I ran this with both my wow windows smaller than normal, so I could kind of see what was going on with character 2. Something is happening which Char 2 when Char 1 presses buttons, but its not quite set up right. Character 2 gets an error message that says there is no target to attack. I have Char 2 set to /follow char 1.

Yes you will need to rename them each time. The script you are using will automatically launch 2 windows and give them the proper names to help them interact with each other. You just need to make sure that the Wow.exe path near the top of the script file is correct, then just hit your Ctrl Alt L buttons to launch everything each time you play ( ... )

I think this is inaccurate, it's been several months since I did my multibox leveling. I did the same set up as you- HKN and Jamba. I think there is a tutorial on HKN on how to clone mouseclicks- basically, you hold a button down, and it will clone the mouse click over to your 2nd window in the same coordinates as the mouse click in your first. I used this primarily for clicking buffs and mounting, but I think I also used it for looting occasionally- i can't remember. Worth looking in to?
