Vent issue

Just wanted to pick some brains about this... I have a vent server I've been using with friends. No one has ever had a problem connecting except this one guy. At first, he said he couldn't connect to .net vent servers. So I changed the domain to a .com one. He still couldn't get on. I changed the password. Nothing. I even called the vent ( Read more... )

I had this problem with a pug vent I used on the regular. I set it up so Ventrilo was run as an Admin and I haven't had a problem since.

This fixes 99% of the people who have problems with my Vent server.

Also, that was incredibly awkward wording.

First: /snerk at the wording. Made my day. :p

Secondly: yeah, usually running as Admin on Vent fixes most problems. I've found doing so fixes Vent not recognizing the mic, your speakers, your headset (USB or otherwise), volume issues, and also DCing problems.

What exactly do you mean by "run as an Admin"? Do you mean give the person admin permissions for the vent server? Or use it on the Admin account on the computer? Or...? I can't be sure if this person has access to the Admin account on his computer... I'll have to ask. If vent is installed under Admin, would it then run normally on other accounts on the computer?

Whenever I use Vent I right click instead of double click and go to "Run As Administrator". I'm not sure how it works when there are more than one Windows users. I am the only user on both my computers, but its worked for every Vent issue I've ever come across.

/roaming Tech Support forum poster slighty necoring a thread

*cough*

The Run as Admin option is seperate and distinct to running a program when logged into an admin user.

The difference is even though you are logged into an admin user not every program gets launched at a admin privilege level. Most of the times when you run programs on an admin user it's actually running at a normal user rights level.

Using the "Run as admin" option on the popup menu (or in the shortcut) specifically says to the o/s "Hey Guppy ! I'm a mofo admin user so run this program at an elevated level capish?"
