Okay, so. I have a tiny priestie who just hit 85 and has had only one spec since vanilla: Shadow. (Yes, I got kicked out of groups a lot just for not being a healer. Yes, it made for very lonely leveling.) Thanks to my love affairs with pallies, shammies and druids, I've acquired the habit of being an oshit healer when the occasion necessitated it

I agree with roguebait, you need good gear for rolling a disc. Ever since Cataclysm, I've always made it a point to go shadow first to gear up before healing. Although my transition to Dragon Soul didn't cause much of a problem (only had 2pc t12 that time, too!, because I was shadow before 4.3 patch).
It pretty much boils down to the healing method you'd prefer. From my understanding, the main difference between the two healing specs is: holy is triage healing whilst discipline is damage mitigation.
I, however, have never tried holy (so I can't speak much for them).
For holy, I get a similar play style on a restoration build (closest would be shammy healing, but holy is just more awesome at bursting HPS. Pallys are more like a holy/disc priest hybrid.). Holy priest healing is pretty much straight-forward. If you need heals, a holy priest can dish it out.
For disc priest, the better you know the fight mechanics, the better healer you are. Again, damage mitigation is where it's at. It's an entirely different play style from the other classes (and we've not even touched on the A/A [smiteheals!] spec).
My preference, obviously, is disc. I'm A/A specced with 4pc t13 (1 still LFR). Mana is not a problem that I can spam HF+Smite on low-damage phases continuously. It is absolutely fun.
