When to kill a name-reserving alt?

Heya, Ladies and Lurkleman. I've got a quick question about server transfers, name changes, and placeholder alts.

My guild is dead and I'm bored and lonely, so I decided, after research, soul-searching and alt-rolling, to realm-change my main to Wyrmrest Accord after Love is in the Air ends. The trouble: her name is already taken there. (Stupid level 75 inactive nelf hunter...) So, I brainstormed, came up with an alternate version of her name that I like and think I can live with, and rolled a baby alt to hold that name until I do the transfer.

My question is, when do I delete the placeholder alt? Blizzard's realm change FAQ says that I'll be prompted to change my name when I log in to that server after the transfer is complete. Will I have the opportunity to order little MyNewName to seppuku when that happens, or should I delete her when I start the transfer wheels turning and just hope for the best?
