Rolled a DK so I could quest through Outlands without leveling my baby mage. I love her to death, but I fight like a fish in a paper bag ( Read more... )

On an RP note: I fail at lore in general, but I thought it wouldn't be unreasonable for a Draenei DK, formally a Paladin, to still be religious as before death. I got the impression that once out of the control of the Lich King Death Knights regained the remains of their old personalities and memories. Do I fail even more at lore than normal or is this passable?

I don't think you could go through what the death knights did - death, raised by necromancy, forced into the Lich King's service, released, now dealing with the memories of what they did under his rule - and come out completely unchanged. With traumatic events, there are always reminders, there are always memories, and there are always scars on your soul that never quite go away, and a freed death knight would have more to work through than most. It takes time and effort to really come back to yourself, and that process, I think, is where death knights can really shine in RP.

I also think they absolutely could regain aspects of who they were before and be a complete person again, and I think a death knight who had strong faith in life could find that faith again. But for a paladin in particular, trapped in an (I'm assuming) undead body and unable to call on the Light as they did in life, I think it would be a severe test of faith. That's another aspect of death knights that I find really interesting - reconciling their faith with what they've had to go through and what they were forced to do. Since draenei are portrayed as an uncommonly pious race overall, I think RPing that journey could lead to some really interesting growth and stories too.

Plus, I would think it would just vary from person to person, just as different people handle the recovery process differently IRL. Both of my DKs are former priestesses of Elune. Syliah retained most of her original personality - quiet, scholarly, kind, and still devout to an extent. Her lingering confusion and scarier DK tendencies lie hidden under the surface, deep enough that they're not an issue when she's interacting with people, but still close enough that she can be manipulated with surprising ease if the right strings are pulled (which, incidentally, is happening in her RP story now and will probably end up twisting her a bit, but I digress ^.~). Serreina is the opposite. She's angry at what was done to her, she's thoroughly pissed at both Elune and the Light for allowing it, and she doesn't hide it. She came unhinged to the point that she got herself temp-banned from Northrend, and in the process of straightening herself out, she's probably experienced more growth than any other of my characters. You'll rarely see her quite as happy as she is in my icon, but she has her moments.

tl;dr, I know, but basically, I think it's reasonable for a DK to regain their personality and their faith and playing through that growth process would be part of the fun. :) And also necessary, because having them come straight from the starting zone at peace with themselves would be a stretch. Too much history to recover from easily.

Minor edit to finish my last thought. OMG this is a really long comment.

Oh yes, she's not completely unchanged. She was already bitter and had some chronic pain issues before becoming a Death Knight. I like the conflict of a religious Death Knight. xD

Allowing your characters to grow is always fun. :3
