I think one of the most frustrating things about being a WoW-lady is when you encounter another female player in-game who embodies all the negative aspects of being a girl gamer.
We pugged a tank for the raid I'm in right now (trying to skimp on details so as not to inadvertently shame someone) and, to be honest, I initially thought the player was male because of the comments SHE, it turns out, was making in raid chat. Things about how it's so awesome she lives in a house with other hot, bisexual female gamers who have foursomes. A guildmate and I were whispering back and forth like "This HAS to be a guy", and then.. she talked in Vent. Nope, all woman.
Her other comments have included such gems as "I don't have maxed cooking on this toon, even though I'm a woman. I'm bad" and repeatedly calling ME "sir" - as in, when I asked what an in-game cooking skill has to do with being a female, she replied "You, sir, have no familiarity with stereotypes." She's apparently watching the BlizzCon feed and was passing comment about all the "fat chicks".
Ugh. Sorry. I just had to vent. It's so GROSS - I mean, these things would be gross coming from a guy, but I guess I expect that kind of attitude. But to know that that's another female player spouting off that garbage? I want to reach through the screen, shake her, and tell her she doesn't have to be "one of the guys" to fit in - at least four of the ten people in this raid are female.
EDIT: Someone asked about the point of this post. It's about the frustration of meeting women who internalize misogyny, and the difficulty of being slightly feminist but knowing that that means embracing ALL women and not just other feminists. The person saying this stuff is a female gamer, and it's a wake-up call to remember that not all female gamers are as aware as the ladies in this comm. And some other stuff.
