So I am in a vacuum now. I have spent the past three days (almost) searching for ways to record graphically acceptable PS3 gameplay on iMac while still playing on tv, and I have found various answers. Sorting out the crap left me with four options:
Pinnacle Dazzle - works for both Mac and PC but apparently offer crappy graphics for PS3 and Xbox. Supposedly better for Wii.
Slingbox - a device that is supposedly cheap and transfer gameplay to Mac. Only found one video about so can't judge.
EyeTv - various types of products (Hybrid mentioned the most) that connects the PS3 to Mac but does not support HDMI (none does). Only component ports are available which, to my knowledge, offer extremely poor graphics.
Hauppauge's HD-PVR - a device (only one it seems) that allows connection to PC to record gameplay in HD, as well as vcr and tv etc. A few sources say it's compatible with Mac but I haven't found official confirmation yet.
I have sent an e-mail to an online retailer asking about the device and are now waiting for a reply. What do I do in the meantime?! I was going to visit a retailer in town about a similar device but I have a strong feeling it's not what I am looking for. I also thought about taking the bus to the bigger electronics retailers outside of town but after calling them and being told they do not sell the HD-PVR, despite the producer saying so, I decided not to.
I wish I was a true geek. If I was I'd know more about these things. Probably time to start subscription on at least ONE Mac magazine.
...and another minor issue, the online store that sells the HD-PVR is out of stock.
