What I've Been Waiting For

This is the day ... the first day of the rest of my life. I have an interview with The Lambda Center in downtown DC - a behavioral mental health center for the GLBT community. Among other services, they have inpatient/outpatient treatment and focus specifically on therapy for addictions and clients with HIV/AIDs. I've been in school for almost the entirety of my life, with little opportunity to work in the exact field of my choice. Now, I have the training to do what I want and this is my time to to make the best of it. I want to work with people and I'm ready to work with a variety of issues, but my DREAM is to work with GLBT people and deliver the services to them that they deserve ... the services that they so rarely can find in other settings.

When I was talking to my mom last night, she said, "ya know, you're SO lucky that you live in this area ... that you live around the city where a lot of GLBT services choose to set up their hubs (like the Whitman-Walker clinic). Many other people may choose to move to DC because they want to work in this field, and you don't have to." And she's right. I never REALLY thought about that, but she's right. Perhaps I'm totally here for a reason. It just so happens that I have grown up around and am still located close to a city where I can work with the issues that I am SO passionate about. I'm either lucky, smart to have stayed around here, or blessed ... maybe all three. Regardless, I have a damn good opportunity ahead of me.

Today is the day folks. Wish me luck!
