Yuletide Letter, 2016
Dear Yuletide Writer,
Hello! This is my first time participating in Yuletide, and I am very excited! I’ve read the rules and tried to lurk around a bit to get an idea of how everything is done, but please bear with me if I commit any Yuletidey faux pas.
I’m generally pretty chill and just delighted at the idea of receiving a fic, so I don’t have a lot of super specific wants or expectations, but I’ll try to offer a few helpful details for each of my fandoms.
Jeeves and Wooster (Characters: Reginald Jeeves, Bertie Wooster)
This is my most beloved fandom, and the one in which I’ve been most active over the years, so it’s also the one for which I have the most well-developed likes and dislikes. In general, the fic I enjoy most in this universe is plotty, light, and fun, in keeping with the tone of canon. I don’t mind a little light angst, as long as things don’t get too grimdark (unless it’s for purely crackficcy purposes).
I ship Bertie and Jeeves, but I’m very easy going about shipping in general. I’d be happy with slash (Jeeves/Bertie or other!), preslash, het, or gen. I don’t mind sex in my fic, but I would much prefer something plotty to just straight up porn.
My big DNWs for this fandom are: Noncon, torture, or abuse (sexual or otherwise). In terms of characterization, I really dislike seeing Bertie portrayed as a misogynist or fearful of women (in general, as opposed to the specific women that he happens to dislike/fear in canon). Also, please don’t vilify Aunt Dahlia. She’s a good egg, dash it!
Things I like to see: Competent!Bertie! Glimpses into Jeeves’s mysterious past and personal life! I also like fun period details/people/events.
I’d love to see a fic in which Bertie and Jeeves have to deal with a relatively serious crisis, and do so with canonical good humor and ridiculous hijinks. The possibilities are endless: how would Bertie and Jeeves deal with a hostage situation? Medical emergency (can you imagine them having to help deliver a baby)? Alien invasion? Maritime disaster?
Oz books, L. Frank Baum (Characters: Princess Ozma)
My favorite of the Oz books is the Marvelous Land of Oz, in which Ozma was first introduced. One aspect of Ozma that was seriously glossed over in the books was the psychological impact of her transition from life as a farm boy (Tip) to life as a girl - particularly a girl dealing with the heavy and very public responsibility of ruling a kingdom! I’d love to see a fic dealing with these issues. I’d like something gen for this one, please.
Blazing Saddles (Characters: Sheriff Bart, Jim, aka “The Waco Kid”)
I’d love to see the further adventures of Sheriff Bart and The Waco Kid after they left Rock Ridge! As with Jeeves and Wooster, I’d rather not see anything super grimdark, but I wouldn’t mind something a little more serious than canon. These two characters have so much potential, and there is a serious heart to them underneath the Mel Brooksian goofiness. Slash or gen is fine with me, but again I would prefer something plotty to straight up porn.
