For roughly a decade, I have been thrilled with the tech support I get
from Bluehost. Now they have completely revamped their support system,
and apparently fired everyone competent.
Case in point:
I log into my shell account and get this message:
Last login: Wed Oct 9 16:23:45 2019 from panix2.panix.com
-jailshell: /bin/tcsh: No such file or directory
-jailshell: exec: /bin/tcsh: cannot execute: No such file or directory
Connection to wotw.biz closed.
(/bin/tcsh is my default shell.)
I call tech support. I didn't get the guy's name, so let's call him
Bozo the Geek. Before looking into this any further, Bozo first insists
that I try a different ssh client --- even though I am logging in
successfully and the problem is clearly at bluehost's server. He then
goes through having me spell my username and domain name to make sure
I'm logging in correctly --- even though I am having no trouble with
my login and the problem comes after I log in.
Then he has me pull up a listing of my home directory via the bluehost
website and insists that I check it to see whether /bin/tcsh is present
in my home directory. I explain to him that it is supposed to be
in the root directory (hence the initial slash), and if the root
directory were my home directory, I wouldn't have to waste my time talking
to him.
He puts me through a full twenty five minutes of this and
progressively more complicated but equally irrelevant garbage before
agreeing to escalate my problem to someone who knows how the shell server
works. I ask to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor is as ignorant
as Bozo. I ask to speak to his supervisor. He says he has no
supervisor; he is the top guy at Bluehost. I am skeptical. (His name
is Rey Rodriguez. I guess I should Google him.)
He asks what he can do to make me happy. I ask him to tell me whether
/bin/tcsh is or is not still present on the server. He tells me I can
check that myself by looking at the listing of my home directory on
the web.
He says all he can do is pass this upstairs and I should hear something
in 48 hours. 48 hours cut off from the site I rely on to use every
day.
Oh MAN I want these guys fired.
