So...I think I'm pioneering something here....

I'm pretty sure I'm the first person to write this...ever. Not positive, though.

Title: In Which Cooper Finds a New Reason to Like the Rain
Author: XoXtX

Pairing: Cooper/Pete
Fandom: Private Practice
Summary: see title.
Disclaimer: I don't own them, but as Tim Daly only lives one state over, if somebody would like to deliver him for Christmas with Paul attached with a leash, I'd be very happy.

Cooper liked to watch the rain. He liked the way it sounded when it hit the roof of this apartment. He liked the way it bounced off the pavement when it came down so hard you couldn’t see three feet. But most of all, he liked it when it rained at night and the moon was out because raindrops look like little diamonds when moonbeams are glowing through them.

Cooper sighed and turned away from the blinds in his office. He’d thought Violet would be an apt distraction; thought that she’d take his mind off Pete. Pete. Oh, Gods, Pete; the one person that he couldn’t have, but that he so desperately wanted. Since who knows when, Cooper had been in love with Pete. He’d loved him when Pete had been heartbroken and numb over his wife’s death. He’d loved Pete even when he’d started falling for Addison. He still loved Pete. Gods, if he hadn’t been happy to find out that Pete had stood Addison up. It meant there was a chance that maybe Pete wasn’t as into Addison as he made it seem- maybe Cooper had a shot again.

Cooper threw on his jacked and flicked off the lights, and then pulled the door shut as he walked into the hallway. He started towards the elevator when he saw that the lights in Pete’s office were on. He knocked on the doorframe even as he pushed the door open.

“Come in.” Pete sounded weary, worn, even. A little piece of Cooper’s heart broke at the sound- it was reminisce of the months after Anna’s death.

“You’re here late.” Cooper said, stepping into the room. He spotted Pete lying on his acupuncture table.

“No, I’m just here early.”

“Touché.” Cooper walked over to the table and sat in the chair next to it. He picked up one of the jars of scented oil placed underneath and started to turn it over in his hands.

“So. Violet’s a no-go?”

“How’d you hear?”

“I stopped over at her place to chat after that I realized that I just…Addison’s…not for me.”

“My door’s always open, you know.”

“I know. I went to your place first, actually, but you weren’t there and I remember you saying something about going to Violet’s so I took a chance. When you weren’t there, I just…I figured who better to talk to than a shrink?”

“Hmph. Yeah. Sorry I missed it. I was over at Addison’s complaining about how I can’t do the whole “friends with benefits” thing with Violet. She deserves so much better.”

“They don’t come much better than you, Coop.”

“You’re kidding, right? I’m so messed up, a four-year-old kid’s finger painting is neater than my brain.”

“You’re wrong, you know. You’re the best person I know, even with the flaws you think you have. You’re honest, if sometimes brutally so; you truly care about your friends; you enjoy helping people; you’re great with kids; you’re funny; handsome; incredibly smart- you’re anything anybody could ever dream of.”

“But I’m no you.” Cooper put the oil he’d been playing with back on the shelf. Pete sat up.

“Cooper Freedman, listen to me closely,” Pete looked Cooper straight in the eye, “I have nightmares about the people I love dying- I have nightmares of you dying. Even though I’m a doctor, I can’t save you and it drives me insane. I wish I could be like you so they would just stop. I wish that I could go screw a random girl I met online without having to explain it to anybody, just so I could forget for one night- just one night. Please, Cooper, make them stop.” And by now Pete’s head was in his hands.

Cooper stood and pulled Pete into a tight hug. He held Pete for what seemed like forever, running his hand slowly up and down Pete’s back. Eventually Pete stopped sobbing and pulled back without releasing Cooper; he pulled back just enough so that Cooper could see the carefully masked circles under Pete’s bloodshot eyes.

“Better?”

“No, but thank you, Cooper.”

“Pete…’

“What?”

“Nothing.” Cooper moved out of Pete’s grasp.

“Hey, Coop.” Pete said just as Cooper turned away.

“Yeah?” Cooper turned around just in time to be pulled into the best kiss of his life. It was hot and messy and all sorts of wonderful.
Cooper added another reason to his list of reasons why he liked the rain as he stop resisting Pete and let himself be pushed back against the table.
