Whether you're currently a parent, don't want kids for a quarter century, or fall somewhere in between, would you prefer to parent boys or girls? Why?
When I was born, my father expected a boy. He wanted me to grow up and be just like him. He has never flat-out told me this, but he has hinted about it enough times for me to know better. And while, yeah, I know he's proud of me for the most part, that 'need' of having a son was also there.
...I inherited that, in a way. I first had a daughter, and don't get me wrong - I was thrilled. But I also wanted a son. It doesn't make me any less proud of Valerie (because that I didn't inherit from Dad), and I certainly don't love her any less, but unconsciously I also had that...desire to have a son. Jake, with his psychobabble, insisted once that it was so I could gain my father's full acceptance, but that's not the reason. At least I don't think it is.
I ended up having a son, but also losing him. But, like I said, that doesn't make me love my daughter any less. I love that I have a girl - I even gave her what she claims to be a very girly name, and I love it - and I'm so proud of her. I'll always be proud of her, just how I would have been with Alex. That'll never change.
