"Have you thought about what I told you?"

Mia rolled her eyes as she rummaged through the cabinets for a bag of rice with one hand, and the other holding the phone up to her ear. "There's nothing to think about. We are not moving, Mom. Especially to Florida."

Maggie, Mia's mother, sighed on the other side of the phone. "You make it sound so horrible."

"Let's see, uprooting my daughter from school in the middle of the school year. She's sixteen. I'd have to lose my job and try to find a new one... Yeah, I'd say it's not looking good, exactly."

"All I'm saying," Maggie insisted, "is that a change might do you both some good."

"I just find it funny that the idea for this 'change' always comes up in March." Mia looked down at the bag of rice in her hand, suddenly saying outloud that it was already March once more rendering her speechless. "We're fine, Mom," she finally said after a moment. "Really."

"There's nothing wrong with admitting you're not, honey." A pause, before she continued even more quietly. "It's going to be Valerie's spring break soon, right? You should both come for a few days. We always go there, maybe you should come here. Just for a few days."

This time Mia paused to think about the idea and sighed under her breath. "Yeah, I... Maybe. I'll ask Val."

"Besides, who knows. Maybe you will enjoy it more once you're here and you'll finally agree to move."

Unable to help it, Mia laughed at her mother's insistence. "Yeah, okay. I'll call you later, mom, I have to make dinner."

"Think about what I said!"

Mia just rolled her eyes again. "Goodbye, mother."

fic, mom
