Today is the 30th anniversary of the violent death of Steve Biko. Biko was an anti-apartheid activist during the 60s-70s in South Africa. He encourage "Black Consciousness",the idea of the urban black populace to have pride in themselves and to better themselves. However, the South African Government jailed him, beat him, and starve him to death... he died on Sept. 12, 1977, (30 years exactly to this day.)
His teachings and his life not only inspires South Africans, but black people all over the world. He definitely inspires me. Here is one of his quotes that is dear to my heart:
"Black Consciousness is an attitude of the mind and a way of life, the most positive call to emanate from the black world for a long time. Its essence is the realisation by the black man of the need to rally together with his brothers around the cause of their oppression - the blackness of their skin - and to operate as a group to rid themselves of the shackles that bind them to perpetual servitude."
