Here is the deal. The whole Massachusetts thing is worrisome a bit. I wasn't going to comment on it, however I am hearing a lot of my liberal friends having heart attacks over it. In addition, since some of them have called me to complain about it, this is my official thought on the current climate.
Honestly, what did you expect? The first black guy becomes president and it would be nothing but rainbows, daffodils, and little pretty deer and bunny rabbits hopping along a clear meadow, and we all come together and sing kumbayah? Really people?
Here is the problem. We elected Obama, then we poked one of his eyeballs out, blindfolded him, tied his hands behind his back, and then demand him to drive the short bus to a stable economy and sheer happiness for all, within the first week of his office. Damn, Americans are some impatient fuckers. It has barely been a year, and they expected Obama to part the damn Red Sea and lead the Israelites out of bondage? I know that America's biological clock of greatness is ticking away, but can't a "brotha" get some help?
Let's look back to the campaign. Obama's main message was about a change against the status quo of Washington and Iraq. He campaigned on working with republicans and democrats to affect change in our society in the spirit our bipartisanship. That is what they told me when I signed on to be a staffer. Obama basically tried to be bipartisan. The problem is that it takes two to tango and the republicans are sitting this dance out. You can't be bipartisan when the opposition won't work together with you on ANYTHING.
Maybe it is Obama's wishful thinking that he could bring people together. However, what maybe him, the liberal white faction, and idealistic brethren fail to realize is the sheer hatred some people on the far right have for Obama. There are some people that literally hate Obama for who he is. I know, people thought racism was over when he was elected, but sorry to burst your bubble. Racism still exists. If anything Obama's election galvanized the far right troops. They have a war like mentality to preserve the "culture" of America. For instance, what president you know still has to deal with the questioning of his background and birth, even after numerous of documents proving his birth? I mean, is George Bush really from Maine? Is Bill Clinton really Guillermo from Esperanza, Oaxaca, Mexico instead William of Hope, Arkansas? Also, people in his own party as well chiming in with the whole "light skinned, Negro speak" debacle. Did someone ever discussed George w. or Bill's twangy southern accent and pale white skin? Come on now. Also, where were these "tea parties" when Clinton was around? or Jimmy Carter? Please, y'all know the deal. Stop being delusional.
Also, lest people forget, the Democratic Party in general is basically a heterogeneous coalition, made up of very distinct factions, more so than the Republican party. Republicans pretty much think alike and are overwhelmingly white. Democrats are made up of black people, latino folks, uber-liberal white people, gays, somewhat socialistic folks, conservative "kinda republicanish but has a bleeding heart" white people, etc. All of them have different agendas, which sometimes compete against each other. The public option thing about health care is a prime example. Democrats caucused 60 Senators before Tuesday. 60 senators makes bills filibuster proof. Two of your 60 are independent. One of them is Lieberman, who basically campaigned against Obama. Then you have your Blue Dog Dems who are basically Republicans in disguise who are not ideological assholes. Ben Nelson, anyone? Now since republicans are not playing nice, then need every one of those votes. That is why your public option is gone.
In a nutshell, Americans are impatient as fuck. THe economy is slowly recovering, yet people expect the old job back now. it took 8 years to royally fuck up the economy to this level. Why do you expect Obama to wave his magic voodoo doll and fix it in three months? Where was this outrage when Bush was spending money like he won a $10,000 shopping spree at Best Buy? Has he made mistakes? Of Course. He underestimating the hatred of him with the retarded right. He didn't vet the Wall Street crooks properly and demand a moratorium on bonuses during the bailout...in which Bush implemented, by the way. He might have caved in too quickly on certain health care issues. I knew he would be the most scrutinized president no matter what he did, because of who he is. That is a fact of life in America. But, damn y'all! it is only the first year.
