Hey, guess what~
Lucian hadn't called Ris or even posted on the community to get her attention. He'd been busy. Explosives were difficult to wire up, and especially with the city underneath such heavy security. There were only so many light tricks he could use.
He'd found his way to the crown, and was standing there now. He looked up at the sky, his buttonless jacket tattered as it blew in the wind, and wondered if it would snow.
Ris tried to ignore the cold, sticking to the shadows and casting them out further than they should have been able to reach as she searched the city. It kept her mostly out of sight, but even then, they weren't paying too close attention to a teenage girl.
She didn't have very much to search, anyway. There was only one barrier left. The elevator had climbed it's way up to the top of the Statue of Liberty, the white coat engulfing her and dragging across the ground as she walked.
"Lucian?"
Lucian didn't turn around, looking up at the sky, hands shoved tight into his coat pockets.
"Think it'll snow?"
"Maybe. It'd be pretty," she tucked her hair back behind her ears. A year ago it had snowed. A year ago they were sitting at dinner, their parents still alive.
Ris chewed on her bottom lip and sat herself down close to the edge, glancing down at the water. "We'll see."
"This city isn't going to last long," Lucian said, and took a step closer to the edge, looking out at the bright city lights.
"Can't see any stars here."
"You never really could. Too many lights." Ris flopped onto her back and giggled. "... it's about time."
"You should be saving this city," Lucian said. "Not waiting for it to die." Another step. The wind whipped his jacket a little harder.
She didn't stop smiling, "What's left to save? My friends are dead. You saw to that. My son is safe across the ocean. My only Seal came back with me knowing full well what was going to happen."
The laughter died in her throat and she sat up. "Besides, even if I did, you wouldn't be there."
"Do you believe in hell?" He felt like he was balanced precisely on the edge of the crown, and a gust of wind might have sent him falling.
He kept up his mental countdown of how long until the explosives went off.
"... I don't think so." She bit her lip nearly hard enough to bleed, a sudden chill making her shake. "... what are doing?"
"What does it look like I'm doing?" he asked, glancing over his shoulder. "You made this choice. I'm finishing things for you."
She felt frozen in place all of a sudden, eyes wide. "You're... Lucian, not you..."
He cracked a thin smile, and took another step.
Ris jumped to her feet, reaching for his hand. "Lucian!"
Lucian let her grab at him, but was too far off to regain his balance. He let her try to make up for it, but kept his mental countdown going.
His hand was cold, her feet planted on the edge, but he was heavier than her and just hanging there and oh god she couldn't hold on she couldn't.
And then she was holding onto nothing and she was alone on the crown.
He fell, staring up at where she was, and mentally counting. How long until he hit the water. How long until the explosives went. Whether he'd die before they did.
She couldn't hear, her heart beating wildly as she backed up, hugging herself. Oh god oh god. Couldn't hear anything but her own heart.
And then her coat was on the ground and her feet were moving on their own as she ran after him, the wind whipping her hair back as she fell.
He kept counting. Time seemed to slow, and he closed his eyes.
Boom.
She was still close enough to the statue to feel it, the blast sending her faster through the air, and she turned her head as it all began to crumble.
Ris laughed and cried at the same time.
He hit the water, and surfaced for long enough to catch Ris.
The explosion sent waves rippling over the both of them, and he didn't bother trying to resurface.
