Palestinian Police Will Be Allowed to Carry Weapons in the West Bank In another development, a gay rights group in Israel postponed an international gay festival planned for August in Jerusalem, rescheduling it for August 2006.
The group, Jerusalem Open House, said it was delaying the festival, WorldPride 2005 because it coincided with Israel's plan to withdraw Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli pullout had been planned for July, but was recently pushed back to August.
Jerusalem Open House said it did not want to hold the festival at a time when political tensions were expected to be running high.
In a rare display of unity, prominent Jewish, Christian and Muslim clerics in Jerusalem recently held a joint news conference to denounce the festival.
But festival organizers emphasized that opposition from religious groups was not the reason for the postponement, adding that a local gay rally is still planned in Jerusalem next month.
