Question: Should more guilds require Authenticators for GBank access?

In the recent times, where account hacks are seemingly increasing again, should more guilds (especially ones with a lot of gold and items worth a lot in total) restrict who gains Bank access (such as officers) to those who have an authenticator on their account ( Read more... )

I don't think it's too much to ask. You're trusting them with thousands of gold worth of stuff representing hours and hours of hard work from everyone to earn those materials.

I think the guild leader should have one too.

Maybe if the GL is willing to pay for 'em!

at $6.50 each for the physical product or less (free on iphone), I dont think it's much to ask for an officer to buy one. Because if they're an officer, they likely spend many hours playing and a good deal of money on monthly fees. A small sum to help protect your guilds resources shouldn't be much to ask.

Lots of ways. Also, if you get hacked after you told your GL that you had one? I suspect you'd be removed from the position at the very least, if not Gkicked.

But to confirm one, you can always ask for a picture of your officer holding the item. Or to give a username and a temp pass (without the authenticator code) to confirm one is attached to the account.

It's not impossible. Small hassle for the security of your account, and the guild's resources.

Account names are going to be email addresses, if they're not already (battle.net merge).

I don't know. I think I'd hesitate to join such a guild. I own an authenticator but I've never activated it. I'm a Mac user and play on my own wifi network (and that of my office sometimes). Of course I've never been in a guild that had a lot of bank to lose. *shrug* YMMV

It's not just to join the guild, but to gain officer access to the guild bank. Wouldn't you like to know that the guild resources are carefully looked after and security put into place to make sure gold farmers dont exploit your guild?

I'd find that comforting, myself. But.. YMMV.

want to hear something scary. SquareEnix started shipping the same things for FFXI and they've already been circumvented.

How you might ask, they put a keylogger into their login program and crash your login as soon as you type it in. They then log in right at that moment and enter the same temporary password and steal all your stuff.

Honestly I think that if it's a rich and prosperous guild bank that everybody should be limited in their access just in case, not enough to hamper people and what they do but enough that the whole thing can't be cleaned out. The only one you can't account for is the guild leader and they should have one anyways really.

That's very interesting. But would be a very difficult hack, and yet, still having an Authenticator on the account would still make the account less likely to be hacked.

They certainly do make the account less likely to get hacked and a lot more secure. Not infallible. But certainly gives the greatest amount of security a WoW account can currently have.
