Discussion Topic: Create-a-Holiday
The fun thing about holidays is that they can be really, really weird. You can be celebrating a failed attempt to blow up the government or other nationally significant event, something seasonal, religious, or just plain silly. And the traditions that go into a holiday are often really bizarre and can seem unrelated without considering the holiday in context of history and the shifting of culture.
Creating holidays is actually one of my favorite things to do when I'm world-building - you can learn a lot about a people by what they celebrate, and how they celebrate it!
Do you have any particular ideas for this random challenge? Are you inspired to take on a particular type of holiday? What sort of context will your holiday have - is this a holiday of the future, or something a lost civilization celebrates, or something in another world altogether? Is there a controversy around your holiday, or is it something everyone loves?
