Foolish Child

Never have I ever yearned for the New Year
On a cold January day
When back to school,
We'd go.

Never have I ever smiled behind my hands
On a chill February night
Valentine's box,
Was full.

Never have I ever enjoyed my birthday
On every March Eighth
Celebrated by
My Mom

Never have I ever dressed up for Easter
On a wet April dawn
In a pink dress,
Smiling.

Never have I ever danced near the fire pit
On a damp May eve
With newfound friends,
Sober

Never have I ever run on the wet sand
At a cool June beach
Lips icy blue,
Shiv'ring.

Never have I ever swum in the ocean
At the warm July dusk
Under the stars,
Naked.

Never have I ever drifted on the marsh
On a hot August day,
Without clothes in
A boat.

Never have I ever started the school year
On a bright September morn
In pigtails and
Gingham.

Never have I ever dressed as a hippie
In a new October snow
My Halloween
Costume.

Never have I ever broken the wishbone
After the November meal
Dad's desserts with
Football.

Never have I ever waited on the stairs
For the first December light
Seeking a gift
For me.

Never have I ever celebrated life
Each of the Year's months.
Foolish child, see?
Happy.
