the last thing the internet needs is yet another review of the watchmen movie but here are a few of my "thoughts" anyway ( some minor spoilers inevitably follow

A couple of friends of mine, who have not read the book, raved about the movie. But one of the guys I went to see the film with hated it.
I wonder will a lot of the missing stuff be included in a DVD version? Difficult to see how they can use the Black Freighter without the Newstand scenes.
ozymandias = thomas newton as played by d.bowie in man who fell to earth
i think the new frontiersman stuff is microscopically foreshadowed RIGHT at the beginning -- also bear in mind that the "real" release is the five-hour one on DVD (as per lord of the rings) not the promotional stunt cinema pre-release
ps i am not a fan of the art of the original AT ALL -- this is not "subtlety" it is emo dreariness and listmaking -- and i much preferred the film's approach to eg the violence (it lets daniel and laurie much less off the hook for their rorschach-wannabe dalliance)
I'm sure our illustrious host will answer that, but I had always assumed it's a tribute to the old Marvel Bullpen Bulletins pages (particularly in the 1960s) on which each item began with ITEM! (And I think Marvel got it from somewhere else--old-time radio commentators, perhaps?)
- mighty mike mittelstadt is quite right - this "ITEM!" nonsense = a half-arsed tribute to ( or rip-off of ) the old marvel gomics bullpen bulletin pages from the 1960s & 70s
it's just an affection really tho - an attempt to make myself appear more interesting - like sometimes replacing Cs with Gs

I also loved the movie and as the days have passed, have been completely suprised by how much of the book they crammed in there. The Black Freighter stuff is by all acounts, totally brilliant. As is the Under the Hood documentary. Also pre-screenings from last year had the movie with another 20 or so minutes that have the fate of Hollis and Captain Metropolis in it. I imagine when the 5 + hour DVD finally hits with everything in its correct place, then we may well see the expansion of the newstand characters so that the ending makes a wee bit more sense. 8 out of 10 seems fair enough to me - it is not a brilliant movie but there is so much in there that I really liked (with only a wee bit of stuff I didnt)

I loved the Awe-Inspiring-If-Unabashedly-Exaggerated alliteration in those things:
