"i find a lot of things boring - mainly eating artichokes" - claudia winkleman, 19/11/2007

ITEM! o my giddy aunt - they took off bargain hunt yesterday to make room for an hour & a half programme "celebrating" the 60th wedding anniversary of the queen & prince philip - bah! - i had to resort to the methadone of "flog it" w/that twit who looks like a "groovy geography teacher" - shouldn't goverage of the royal family be restricted to the minority channels these days? ( - "uk tv outdated institutions" or somesuch )

anyway, tim wonnacutt = the queen of my heart ( it's back on today )

ITEM! iacgmooh: cos he won the egg timer task, rodney's got immunity from the first eviction tomorrow - it probly just proves i'm a humourless uptight old spoilsport but i am finding quite a few of his bon mots tiresome & offensive ( he's just doing it to wind ppl up, i know ) - also, i'm sure lynne franks = awful to live with, even for a short period of time - but they do seem to be openly bullying her now ( led by janice & rodney )

none of this has stopped me watching it, of gourse - biggins to win...! ( - much as i like katie hopkins, even i'm not so deluded to think she cld triumph )

& now by unpopular demand, my "thoughts" on a gouple of recentish gomics:

ITEM! illuminati no.5 by bendis, reed, cheung & morales: suddenly it all makes sense - well, at least a lot more sense than it did previously - this is by far the best issue of the series, explaining & putting into gontext the previous four - quite early on there's a v.goob "shock" reveal ( - well, i wasn't expecting it anyway )

iron man gathers the big cheeses of the marvel universe together for one last time - to investigate the mystery of the elektra skrull - there's lotsa trademark sparky bendis style dialogue as our heroes bicker & battle a new generation of super skrulls - reed richards seems to be the sub mariner's bitch a bit too often but otherwise the characterisation = fine - & the artwork = really q.goob - cheung has def. improved over the course of the series - some pages are packed with tiny panels - presumably to give him the opportunity include more splash pages throughout - but the pictures are pretty & his storytelling = clear

of gourse, it being a gurrent gomic you never get a "proper" ( ie satisfying ) ending but rather another shakeup of the marvel u status quo - which leads into the next big story, "the secret invasion" - as these things go, it's very well done

ITEM! the unfunnies first follies by mark millar & anthony williams: i bought this gompilation of the unfunnies nos.1&2 cos i'd heard it was gontroversial & in bad taste, this dirty funny animal gomic - & it IS in v.bad taste - but it's also kind of... wussy - it doesn't have the gourage of its gonvictions & a double standard is at work - all the sex occurs off panel but all the violence occurs on the page

becos of the hype i was expecting something like the worst excesses of r.crumb, s.clay wilson or roberta gregory's infamous bitchy bitch story in naughty bits no.1 - but this 'un talks the talk but doesn't really walk the walk - also, some of the points millar = trying to make were made much more elegantly way back when in alan moore & don simpson's pictopia

the artwork really isn't very goob either - the colouring govers up a lot of gaps & deficiencies - sorry to say but i don't think a.williams = suited to drawing funny animals - tho there is a def. improvement between issues 1 & 2 - at the back of the gomic they've reproduced an alternate cover or poster by keith giffen - god knows he has his faults but it really does show what a more expressive artist cld do w/the story & characters

on the plus side: it's very potty mouthed - i laughed out loud twice ( which isn't a bad hit rate really ) - & you'd have to have a heart of stone not to be amused by the plight of poor chick chick chickie...

tim wonnacutt, flot it, iron man, the o'jays, katie hopkins, pictopia, don simpson, christopher biggins, secret invasion, i'm a celebrity get me out of here, skrulls, bargain hunt, alan moore, brian michael bendis illuminati, jim cheung, it takes two, the unfunnies, mark millar, claudia winkleman
