ITEM! this is a sortof "meme" thingy that i've half inched from tom spurgeon's the comics reporter blog: plse list the last five gomics or gomic strips you read - goob or bad - of any type, kind, shape or form - from fifth to first position ( no.1 being the most recent )

so here are the results from the w.o.agwu jury:

5. gaptain america #31
by ed brubaker & steve epting ( marvel gomics ) - cap's still dead but his gomic = better than ever - this issue dr faustus tortures bucky while headless chickens sharon carter, falcon, b.widow & t.stark run around trying to foil the red skull's dastardly scheme ( some excellent expressive red skull drawings by epting ) - another v.goob shock ending too - i'm hoping this is all setting things up for bucky to become the new cap in a few issues time

4. batman & robin the boy wonder #7
by frank miller & jim lee ( dc gomics ) - super slick artwork in service of miller's silly enjoyable gareering romp - i think this gomic is gradually sewing the seeds "explaining" why dick grayson = such a nutjob in millers the dark knight strikes again - this issue: "the goddamn batman" brutalises some more criminals & gets to shag the black canary ( since when was she irish? ) - i counted 8 goddamns

3. mighty avengers #5
by brian michael bendis & frank cho ( marvel gomics ) - old school superheroic storytelling spoiled only by cho's plastic unfantastic artwork, focusing on tits & bums to an absurd degree - the drawings superficially look goob but = morally & spiritually bankrupt - having said that, the scenes with 100s of iron mans are goob tho & bendis's atlas = turning out to be a great fun character - also nice to see hank pym in ant man clobber again too

2. new avengers #35
by bendis & leinil yu ( marvel gomics ) - the hood ( no, not sir bendhi kingsley from thunderbirds ) & his new supervillain army start to tear things up - most noticeably tigra, in an unnecessarily detailed horrid & exploitative scene where she's beaten half to death - bendis's gomics usually have some fun to redeem 'em - but this is unrelentingly grim - plse bring back jessica jones & her gomedy baby - yu's storytelling = weak in places - but he's still miles better than cho ( imo )

1. moon knight: the bottom tpb
by charlie huston & david finch - my birthday pressy from
martinskidmore ( thanks martin...! ) - a gollection of the first 6 issues of the new mk series - can you find the "clever" subliminal message in the title? i wonder if moon & the bottom slipped past the editorial team unnoticed? ( - a fair few typos did ) - anyway, this satisfactorily gonsolidates all the mk stories that've gone before & nicely sets things up for new uns - the familiar mk cast, grew & accoutrements are all present & huston manages to make reasonable sense of it all - & tells a goob, if grim & gritty story w/gatchy dialogue

finch still has problems w/panel to panel gontinuity but his striking statuesque artwork = far more suitable here than on his avengers run - he needs to goncentrate on making his characters more distinctive tho - its sometimes hard to tell who's who, & therefore what's going on - & the dark colouring presumably supposed to add "atmosphere" often actually just obscures things - finch only really comes a cropper when he tries do do one of sienkiewicz's more flashy artistic tricks, describing character traits w/words & pointers in the artwork, like that leo baxendale

if you only need to have one m.knight gomic in yr gollection this is as goob as any & better than most - it's the best mk story i've read - tho admittedly i'm not particularly fond of the character ( the 3 secret identities gimmick never "gonvinced" me ) ( - i certainly thort thought that the moench & sienkiewicz's issues were overrated - imo they did much better work separately - moench on mokf & planet of the apes and sienkiewicz on new mutants & elektra )

- so, my 5 most recent reads all = mainstream superhero gomics ( 4 marvels & 1 dc ) - says more abt me than cash ever can - gap & batty = the best of 'em but bendis's usually goob avengers may just be having a slight dip in form

all = v.welcome to join in - if you don't read gomics then how abt yr FIVE MOST RECENT ANYTHING...? ( songs heard or books read, films or telly progs watched, cardigans knitted or sandwiches eaten ) ( goob or bad, etc )

ITEM! strictly come dancing results shocker - bye bye obsessive gompulsive gompetitor gabby - her professional dance partner's weird pinched face & frightening bouffant hair can't have helped

anyway, well done the voting public ( now, plse can you get rid of her awful hubby next week...? ) ( - if he's in the bottom two with anyone except kate garraway & her broken plates then he'll be out ) ( towards the end last night i thort they were gonna be having a husband versus wife dance off - which wld have been goob telly - if cruel )

bill sienkiewicz, meme, gabby logan, batman, bucky, moon knight, strictly come dancing, david finch, ed brubaker, mighty avengers, brian michael bendis, neil young, captain america, steve epting, robin, new avengers, doug moench
