TSCC 2.19 This is the Day, part 2: Picspammy discussion (spoilery if you haven't seen it)

This episode, I will go out on a limb and say, is one of the best, if not the best episode of the series. It is the best concerning Thomas's performance.

I didn't cap the whole ep, but the three scenes that were what I view as the crux of the ep.

I think one of the themes addressed in this ep is sacrifice. What is sacrificed, whether we know it or not. Riley, Jesse and Derek's baby ("You have no idea what they took from us!") love, innocence, youth, trust. For humanity, both universal and personal.

There was talk, I know, of Thomas not being able to pull off the transformation to THE John Connor. I have one thing to say to the haters.

JOHN CONNOR IS IN THE HOUSE.

When he shows up in Jesse's hotel room and outlines how he's known for a while what she was doing? Goosebumps. And how he could have helped Riley and he didn't, because "maybe [he] wanted to win," you see just what has to be lost for John to become John Connor.

This was, in essence, his Prince Hal moment. He became King. He didn't want to be King, he didn't ask for it. But it is his.

"You're John Connor?"
"Yes, I am."

"She did that to you [the marks on Jesse's face], didn't she?"

He lets Jesse go. If he has to live with it, so does she. But Derek "isn't John Connor."

We learn that Andy Goode was his best friend, his "brother." But Derek killed him "For Kyle, for John... and for you," he tells Jesse.

So, if he can kill his best friend, he can kill the woman he loves...

Or can he?

We don't definitively know the answer to that. I'm thinking no.

Back in Jesse's hotel room, Derek and John talk. For the whole of their relationship, Derek has reminded John that he's not John Connor, wanting him to toughen up while also beating John over the head with hurtful things. This doesn't change.

"We follow.... we rise or fall on YOUR shoulders. Humanity rises, or falls. But we're always watching."

"For me to make a mistake?"

"For you to be human."

Back in the house, John sits, with Sarah and Cameron:

He's still a sixteen-year-old boy who lost someone he cared about.

He finally breaks down.

(Thomas told Annie that the original script had John turning to Cameron. But Thomas and the writers discussed it and all agreed no, he needed to go to Sarah. To Be Human.)

God, I love this show.
